Obituary
Mary Agnes Currie
Sydney Mines
Mary Agnes Currie, who loved to be called “Gran” departed her loving family on Saturday, November 20, 2021. Born in Little Pond, N.S. on January 22, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Bert and Theresa (MacNeil) Boutilier.
In her younger years, Gran worked several jobs in Pictou and Ontario to assist during War Time. She also established a successful convenience store, along with her brother, Lawrence, in Little Pond, where our dad went and asked her for their first date and the rest is history.
After she got married and had her five children, Gran became the best stay-at-home mom anyone could have. She was an excellent baker, seamstress and lovingly designed many outfits for her children and grandchildren. Gran was the original Mike Holmes, who took our house and made it into our Home, where she gladly welcomed anyone who visited throughout the years. Gran’s favourite pastimes were reading, playing cards and spending countless hours talking and spending time with her children and grandchildren, all of whom she was so proud of and held a special bond. Even though she was almost 99, her mind, quick wit and sense of humour never failed.
Gran was the Matriarch of our family and we will always cherish the memories and special relationship she had with each and every one of us. She is survived by her children, Joe (Clare) Currie, Bert (Donna) Currie, Margaret (Dannie) Campbell, and Paula (John) Legatto. Also left to mourn are her grandchildren, Morgan (Jess), Joseph (Shelley), Andie, Ben (Vicky), Sean (Katie), Johnnah (Tim), Taylor (Matthew), Mitchel, Vanessa (Brad) and Tian; and her great grandchildren, Harry and Nora, Brayden and Gracie.
Gran was predeceased by her husband, John Joseph Currie, her daughter, Deanna Deveaux and her husband, Craig, her brothers, John (Mae), Stanley (Sis), Sidney, Hector (Medie), Lawrence (Kay) Garf (Sadie) and her only sister Cassie (Fred).
We would also like to thank Carm Lyle for being such a great and loyal friend to Gran; her neighbours at Parkview Seniors Complex, especially Mary Gardiner, where she was the first tenant and a place that she also thought of as her second home; Homecare, especially Angie Barry, who she called her “other daughter”, Dr. Kohlsmith, Miner’s Memorial Manor, and the Palliative Care Staff on 4th floor at Northside General Hospital for being so kind to Gran and making her last days so comforting.
As much as Gran was still looking forward to spending Christmas with her family, we take solace in knowing that she will be with our Dad, Deanna and Craig and her loved ones that have passed on. Donations in her memory may be made to the Northside Hospital Foundation.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, November 26, 2021, at 2 pm, in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Fabian Ihunegbo officiating. Proof of vaccine will be required at the church. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
We love you Gran, you are the best person we have ever known, and we will never forget you!
