Martha Johnson
1952-2021
Martha (Cox) Johnson of Kilburn, NB, died in hospital in
Perth-Andover, NB on April 18, 2021 at age 68.
Not many people get to write their own obituary, but Martha did. She
always wanted to do things her way, and for one last time, she gets
her wish:

Martha is survived by her husband Mark and children Emma and Luke.
She was born in Welland, Ontario, to Cyril and Vivian (Davis) Cox and
was a sister to Barry of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, and the late
Judy Moody of Cornwall, Ontario.
Martha and Mark met at Mount Allison University, but it was many years
before she “wore him down”, and they were married in 1980.
For the last forty years Mark has been her rock, the love of her life.
Emma and Luke were a great source of pride to their Mom: academically,
in sports, basically anything they did – but most of all for their
kind, caring, and decent ways. She always said that the kids got their
dad’s looks and brains, but her heart and humour.
Martha had great experiences teaching school in both Sackville, NB and
Perth-Andover and was so pleased to follow her students’ lives.
Throughout the later years, Martha served on various committees and
boards, locally and provincially, most dealing with health and
education. She went to her first Home & School meeting a year
before Emma started kindergarten – to make sure the school was
prepared …… not for her children, but for her!
Martha’s family was her life. All she ever wanted was to be a
good wife and Mom.
Helping to give peace to Martha is the fact that both Emma and Luke
have wonderful spouses. Ryan O’Connor fit in to the family right
from the “get go”. He and Emma have two little girls,
Violet and Hannah, who have brought endless joy to the family.
Mallory, Luke’s wife, is as beautiful on the inside as she is on
the outside. She was always the voice of reason to Martha, and advised
her on many things.
Martha also adored her dogs … and loved and spoiled 9 of them
over the years. She was always up for a game of crib or to watch a
good round of golf (or a baseball game or curling match for that
matter).
She is so very grateful for the many close and wonderful friends, both
near and far, she has been so fortunate to have had over the years.
She tried her best to be thoughtful of them, and not to miss a
birthday or an anniversary. She has been deeply touched by their
kindness shown to her over the course of her life, and certainly
during recent times.

Martha, along with that most wonderful sense of humour, which could
make anyone laugh, left us too soon after a long, brave battle with
cancer. She will be missed beyond words.
A celebration of Martha’s life will be held in the coming days.

If anyone so wishes, a memorial donation to the Canadian Cancer
Society, Florenceville’s DunRoamin Stray & Rescue (for
dogs!), or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated
by the family.

Wendy called today to let me know Martha had passed–I am beyond sorry to hear this. My thoughts and prayers are with Mark & the family. Martha was a great woman, well in all the ways she mentions in her write-up, and so much more. I am grateful to have known her for close to 50 years. God speed–Christan–Being a teacher, Martha would always go out of her way to write my name on the blackboard–reminding our class of “73, my name is not Christian.–Lots of good, kind, caring memories.
On what was truly a bright sunny and warm day on the West Coast, this sad news, has cast a deep shade. . Although we have not been in contact for a number of years, I have always viewed Martha with high esteem.
We were friends at university, and her sprit and dedication, has allowed the class of 73, to remain united and anchored in the memories of our experiences at Mt. A.
To Mark, and her family, my thoughts and may her memory stay with you forever.
Sad news, indeed. I have such memories of Martha in student days. Always with a beaming smile. My most recent memory is Martha urging me to lead the class cheer at the 45th, and helping to train the class. She will be missed. Condolences to Mark & her family.
