Obituary
Mark Moloney, 90, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 25th, at PRHC with his loving family by his side, and after a short illness. Born and raised in Ennismore, a descendent of Peter Robinson settlers, he grew up on the farm on Ennis Road. While working at GE, Mark took his shirts to be cleaned at Fannings laundry, where he met a lovely British girl. He knew a good thing when he saw it and, after an extremely un-Mark-like whirlwind courtship, he married the love of his life, Joan Benfield. Blessed with three children, their 63-year marriage focussed on family and fun, enjoying family trips to Expo ’67, California, England, Ireland, and summer seasons at their trailer on Deer Bay.
Mark lived a truly blessed and fun-filled life with his outgoing and energetic wife and was an incredible father and “Dad” to Jeannie, Jim (Lori) and John (Trudy). His love, selflessness, generosity, wisdom, and mentorship will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
He was beloved “Papa” to grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Kelsey (Ian), Thomas, Mark, Mike (Amanda), Tori, David (Sarah), Ben, Emily, Aidan, Cole, Zoe, Payton, Danica, and Nova. They were fortunate to hear his many stories of Family, growing up in Ennismore, and to debate history, politics, science, and technology, while he held court at the kitchen sink.
He loved and was loved by Bev (Barry) and Jess. Predeceased by siblings Jack (Gertrude), Helen (Vic Kokko), Vic (Jean), Frank (Pat) and Jim (Theresa). Survived by brother Bob (Fran) and innumerable cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours. Mark was the custodian (and notorious labeller) of Moloney history, folklore and was the architect and curator of many epic Moloney Family Reunions. He will be with us in spirit for the 200-year Anniversary of the arrival of the Peter Robinson Settlers in four years’ time.
Mark and Joan spent many memorable evenings with their fun-loving “gang” – Bob and Margie Vass , Doug and Shirley Morden, Ann and Bob Ross, Bob and Ruth Raaflaub, Brian and Shirley Hodson and Ron and Linda Brown.
Mark was truly humble & modest and seldom spoke of his many accomplishments as an imaginative draftsman, machine design engineer, inventor, and technologist. Mark apprenticed as a draftsman at GE and contributed to the success of Fisher Gauge for most of his working career.
Generosity was a foundation of Mark’s character. He was a regular supporter of the Peterborough Foodbank and the Peterborough Youth Emergency Shelter. Donations to either charity, acts of kindness, and love, are the best ways of honouring his memory.
We will gather to celebrate Mark’s long, happy life, in true Irish fashion, with music, stories, and a toast or two at 7pm, Saturday, November 6, at the Holiday Inn.
Family will say a sad goodbye to our beloved husband, Dad, Papa, Brother, Uncle, and Friend at 11am Monday, November 8th, at Highland Park Cemetery.
