Obituary
Mark Gordon Stone October 3, 1964 – January 31, 2021
It is with breaking hearts and disbelief that the Stone family announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Mark Gordon Stone in his 56th year on January 31st, 2021. He will be lovingly remembered by his ex-wife Tamalea Meister Stone, daughter Rachel Elizabeth Stone and son Benjamin Adam Stone, all of Ottawa. He will be greatly missed by his father George E. Stone of Peterborough, sister Carrie Webb of Deer Island, NB, and beloved girlfriend Trisha Perez of the Philippines. He is predeceased by his mother, Alma Mary Stone and brother-in-law, Phillip. Some say the wealth of a man can be measured by the number of friends he has. With that sentiment, Mark was the richest man ever. He leaves behind many friends, some dating back to grade school, who will miss his antics, smile and good-natured personality.
Mark was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec and moved with his family to Cavan, Ontario where he attended North Cavan Public School and eventually Crestwood Secondary School in Peterborough. He enjoyed many interests including hockey, music and photography. His interest and love of flying was sparked by the time spent as a proud Air Cadet of Squadron 534 from 1977 to 1984. He obtained his pilot license – multi-engine – IFR in 1995 and enjoyed trips to near and far places, including a much talked about flight to the Bahamas for an afternoon swim. He served as a photographer at CFB Trenton in the Canadian Forces (Reserve) during the summers of 1983 -1986 and continued his love of photography for many years. He is known to be the one snapping photos at social functions and framing and hanging the collages on his walls.
Mark was a CHEX – CFMP Radio operator and live on-air weekend DJ from 1982 to 1985 before he attended Seneca College for Advertising and Broadcasting. He returned to Peterborough in 1986 and entertained many as the Manager of Club 123, an underage hang-out where his love of theme parties was born. Mark was likely most well known locally for his work with his family business, AM STONE Direct Mail Services and Internet Marketing from 1990 to 2003 and then branching off to his own business venture, Auction Media Inc. from 2000 to 2018. During this time, he was a proud member of Rotary (Peterborough Club) and the recipient of the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2001.
Mark was always a kind-hearted and compassionate man with strong ties to family and this was no more evident when he cared for his mother until her passing. This situation spurred him on enrolling at Sir Sanford Fleming College in 2017 where he obtained his Personal Support Worker Diploma. Upon graduating, he worked as a PSW at St Joseph’s at Fleming, Peterborough Manor, and private home-based services until he got “the call” to return to his dream and first love. He was working for Helie Film Support in Toronto at the time of his death. His dream was to work in the film and television industry in whatever capacity he could and boasted about his dream coming true, without divulging the details of the sets he was on. However, most recently, he was credited as a full-time member of the crew on The Handmaid’s Tale.
Mark met and married his “soul mate”, Tamalea, in 1996, one year after their first date. They built a house together where they raised a young family, including his beloved dog Ginger and cat Jelli and made some awesome memories. Even though he eventually divorced in 2016, he remained very close to Tamalea as they were bonded forever by their children. He loved to share his life and interests with his friends including his timeshare in Florida, conveniently a 4-minute drive from Walt Disney World, trips to Mexico and hosting awesome theme parties where he would bring the fun and sun from the Caribbean to his basement!
Mark was always up for a new adventure including more recent trips to the Philippines, where he met his girlfriend, Trisha. He will best be remembered as a dreamer, a “kid at heart”, one of the “good” guys who never had a bad thing to say about anyone, always donning a smile, wearing his trademark shorts, crocs and circa 1990 fanny pack (all year round). He was always willing to lend a hand for a friend in need. He was a proud dad and would often be seen shuttling Ben and Rachel around to their various events in his minivan. Anyone who has crossed paths with Mark will have a stamp on their heart that will never fade.
Due to pandemic restrictions, his private funeral service held at Highland Park in Peterborough will be live streamed on Feb 6, 2021 02:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) via zoom. A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date when we are able to socialize again.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. A SunLife Trust has been set up for educational expenses for Rachel Stone and Ben Stone. Cheques can be made payable to SunLife and/or funds may be received via e-transfer to tstone.ot@gmail.com
