Marie’s Obituary
God sees the little sparrow fall, it meets his tender view; if God so loves the little things, I know he loves me too.
It is with immense sadness that the family of Marie Wheaton announces her passing on November 18, 2021.
Born 26 August 1927 on Change Islands, Marie was raised and lived most of her life in Frederickton, NL. In 1947, she married the love of her life, Lemuel Wheaton, and they raised four children: Junior, Winsor, Beverley, and Trevor. While she spent a significant amount of time tending her home, she also worked as a storekeeper and a home care attendant.
Marie believed in living her life to the fullest, riding roller-coasters in her eighties, travelling to national church conferences – even meeting Archbishop Desmond Tutu. She was interviewed about her pet seagull, Sam, on Much Music when it was the coolest channel (according to her grandchildren) and when in a restaurant and saw something on the menu she wanted, she would have it, regardless of the price.
But while she made sure to enjoy herself, she is likely best remembered by all for how she enjoyed the company of others. She was sincere and outgoing, making connecting with her easy. Marie could strike up a conversation with anyone. She surely made a new friend every day and loved running into old acquaintances. She served in many roles with the United Church over the years and was deeply passionate and especially connected to the United Church Women’s organization. Her faith in God was steadfast throughout her life and comforted her to the end.
Marie was predeceased in death by her father Alex Wheaton; mother Jessie May; her husband of 37 years Lemuel; brothers Jose, Brett, Gerald, Newton, and Heber; grandsons Nevin and Michael; and great-grandson Cole. Left to remember her fondly are her four children: Junior (Beatrice), Winsor (Rowena), Beverley (Robert) Drummond, and Trevor (Allyson); her siblings Mary (Neil) Strickland, Lewis (Julie) Wheaton, Carl Wheaton, and Herbert (Mary Ann) Wheaton. She will be missed by her grandchildren Shawn, Nancy, Adam, Heather, Amy, Jonathan, Rebecca, Kristie-Ann, Kathryn, and Karen; step-grandchildren Jesse and Ty, and 19 great-grandchildren along with a large circle of relatives and friends.
Public visitation will take place from Stacey’s Funeral Home – Gander on Roe Avenue from 1-5 PM on Saturday, November 20, 2021 and at Frederickton United Church from 2:00pm-4:30pm and at 6:30p-8:30pm on Sunday November 21, 2021.
Funeral service will take place from Frederickton United Church on Monday, November 22, 2021 at 2:00pm. Vaccination passport (VaxPassNL) will be required.
Flowers will be gratefully accepted while donations can be made to the Frederickton United Church Cemetery Fund or the Fraser Road United Church Gander.
