Margaret Alice Drake Jaques Godsoe 19432021

Margaret Alice Drake (Jaques) Godsoe
1943-2021
On May 16, 2021, a loving and generous heart stopped beating
at the Saint John Regional Hospital due to complications from
metastasized breast cancer.
Born in Campbellton, N.B. on Feb. 5, 1943, Peggy was the
daughter of the late William and Barbara (Poole) Jaques of Dalhousie,
N.B. She is survived by her husband Arnold, her sister Iris (David)
Cosh of Kingsburg, N.S. and her brother Tim of Campbellton, N.B. as
well as several nephews and nieces, of whom she was very
fond.
She was predeceased by her parents, and by her brother
William (Lorraine) of Cape Breton Island.
She grew up in Dalhousie and after graduation, became a
teacher. On May 27, 1967, she married Arnold at Christ Church
Cathedral in Fredericton.
They moved to Montreal soon after, where she taught school in
the Anglophone system until her retirement. She was known for her
commitment to her students, particularly those who needed extra
encouragement.
She and Arnold led an active life in the big city with many
friends and acquaintances, and their large Christmas parties were
legendary.
They returned to New Brunswick after her retirement to live
in Campbellton, and later, Fredericton.
Peggy kept wide-spread family and friends in contact,
including friends she first met in elementary school. She knew
everyone’s birthday and wedding anniversary, and was famous
for sending cards on all occasions, usually with a kind and
encouraging note included.
She looked forward to gatherings of family and old friends.
In recent years she enjoyed spending time in Nova Scotia at the home
of her niece, Dr. Sarah Cosh, along with her nephew Ian Cosh and
brother Tim.
Beside her love of books, from her mother she inherited her
compassion for animals. She and Arnold kept many cats and dogs over
the years. The most recent is Horus, her adored Sphynx cat, who will
miss Peggy as much as the rest of us.
A great void has been left in our lives as a result of her
death which will never be filled. As her nephew Ian said, “She
made the world fun and magical for us as children, and she kept it
that way throughout her life.”
Celebration of Peggy’s life is on hold until
pandemic restrictions ease. Donations are encouraged to charities in
her memory, such as the Canadian Cancer Society, the Nature
Conservancy of Canada, Children Believe, or your local chapter of the
SPCA.
