Jean Mallon was born and raised in Belfast, N. Ireland to parents John and Mary Brown. She grew up alongside 9 beloved siblings and they grieved the loss of 4 others in infancy and childhood. Jean often told the story of spotting her future husband, John Mallon from the front window of her home when he returned from Canada to Ireland for a holiday. She flung open the door and yelled, Welcome home, John! They dated during this holiday and then wrote for two years. Jean took a leap of faith and love and immigrated to Toronto to marry the love of her life at age 21. Jean and John celebrated 51 years of marriage prior to John’s death in 2012. They truly modeled unconditional love, friendship and support throughout their married years. John and Jean raised three daughters: Geraldine, Patricia and Susie. They enjoyed a childhood rich with love, security, laughter, great Irish food and song, and lifelong support.
Jean was joyful and well-loved by family, work mates, and friends. She lived a life of faith and prayer and was a long-time member of the Holy Cross and Precious Blood parishes. Jean was especially fond of gardening and the plants and flowers responded to her love and care by providing a garden paradise in their backyard. She worked hard with seemingly unmatched energy and enjoyed life with a focus on the meaningful aspects of life. She was passionate about family celebrations and holidays creating some of the sweetest memories for her family and friends. Jean especially made Christmas a magical time each year.
Jean showed great strength and grace even as she faced the loss of her soulmate and then later a diagnosis of dementia. As her memory began to fade, it become clear which events were the most precious to her these were the stories she told most often and hung unto. For the last few years, Jean received expert and loving care in Bay Ridges Long-Term Care Home in Pickering. She was known to be joyful and enjoyed friendship and dancing until her final days. She has left a legacy of love and grace with all who knew her.
Jean will be greatly missed by her three daughters Susie, Patricia (Brad Adams), Geraldine (Bill Algar)and grandchildren Riley (Tony Bretney), Shannon, Alannah, Kelly and John and great-grandchildren Emery, Audrey, Liam, Aurora and Ray.
Jean will also be missed by her brother Billy and sister, Sheila of Ireland. Jean was predeceased by beloved siblings in Ireland, England and the U.S.: Seanie, Frankie, Harry (brothers) and Anne, Delores, Geraldine, and Christine (sisters).
Jean’s family is also very grateful that she enjoyed many wonderful friendships over the years; many of which became like family.
