Lucy Una Chin, affectionately known as Moms, was born on November 24,1918 in Crooked River, Clarendon, Jamaica. Her father was James Hue and mother Lauriebelle Anderson. She was the eldest of six, survived by her sister, Vete; predeceased by her husband Cyril and siblings Linny, Bibby & Ceta.
She moved to Rock River with her parents and siblings as a young teenager and went to school there. She was very talented and became an exceptional seamstress, sewing without a pattern.
She met Cyril Chin (deceased) who had emigrated from China. They married on December 25, 1936. They were married for 59 years and had seven children two of whom are deceased (Babs and Lance).
They lived in Rock River, Clarendon where they opened a wholesale and retail shop that included groceries, fabric and a bakery. Moms and Pops were very generous and would often give free groceries to people who could not afford it. Every year they would cook a feast and welcomed anyone to celebrate Chinese New Year with them. Being one of the few people who had a radio back in the day, the shop was often the centre of gatherings when there was an important announcement.
She shared her love of music with her community by singing and playing the organ for the Rock River Baptist Church and the Barbican Baptist Church in Kingston. She directed the choir and the Sunday School children for Easter and Christmas pageants.
In 1950, the family moved from Rock River to Kingston. The first shop they had was in Maverley and then Verbena Avenue. They retired in 1965 and moved to Stony Hill. In 1971 they emigrated to Toronto.
Moms was a very good cook and baker. The family is still using her Christmas pudding and cake recipes to this day. She loved gardening and looking after her grandchildren.
She always taught us to be kind to others and respect everyone. Trust in God, always try your best, never give up. God doesn’t give you any more than you can bear.
During her illness, she never lost her sense of humour. In the hospital, she said the soup tasted like gully water!
Moms will be lovingly remembered by her five children: Gem, Blossom, Cherry, Myrna (Jerry) and Angela; grandchildren Avril, Grayson (Chen), Debbie (Dirk), Peta-Gaye (Brent), Duane (Heather), Natalie (Ryan), Conrad; great-grandchildren Alessandra, Lukas, Eric, Carsten, Amari, Kevin, Caitlyn, Annika, Meredith, Spencer, and many other family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to the Markham Stouffville Hosptial.
