Obituary
Hagel, Louise Marie
On August 10, 2021 Louise Marie Hagel (nee Prefontaine) passed away at Royal University Hospital. She was 69 years old. Louise was born in Quebec City, QC and grew up in Montmartre, SK where she was involved in figure skating, learned to play the piano and enjoyed sports of all kinds. She moved to Saskatoon after graduating from high school in 1969 where she attended the University of Saskatchewan and obtained her BSc. in Nursing in 1973. She married Wayne Hagel in 1974 and settled on the farm south of Allan, SK where they raised their three children. Throughout the years Louise’s nursing career allowed her to experience several different positions including summer jobs at the Montmartre Hospital and Camp Monahan, teaching positions at the Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury in Ponoka, AB and at SIAST in Saskatoon, RN posts at the University Hospital in the Emergency, Surgical and ICU wards and the Allan Potash Mine. She also played an integral role in bringing health care to the community of Allan by assisting in setting up the doctor’s office and pharmacy and where she worked as an RN. In 1990 Louise began work at what is now known as the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture (CCHSA). Her work at the CCHSA allowed her to pursue her Masters of Science in Community Health and Epidemiology, which she obtained in 1998. She loved her career at the “Centre” as she called it and travelled all over the province, out east and even in the US in pursuit of her research. She met many colleagues through her work and made some very good friends during her career there. She retired in 2016.
Throughout Louise’s life, she volunteered on various boards and committees including the Figure Skating Club and the School Board, in the church teaching Catechism classes, being involved in the CWL and the choir and most recently as a Town Councillor in Allan. She was always willing to help out and to give back to the community. Louise was an accomplished seamstress making many costumes for figure skating and Halloween, dresses for grads and weddings and clothing for her children and grandchildren. She sewed blankets and linens for her grandkids and seemed to always be working on a project. Louise was also an avid gardener and spent hours and hours planning her flowers and yard each spring and caring for her plants throughout the season. Many family memories have been made in the backyard paradise which she created. Louise enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was always ready to play cards, lend an ear or just visit.
Louise was predeceased by her father Dr. Lionel Prefontaine and her mother Rita Prefontaine (Pulai). Louise is lovingly remembered by her husband Wayne; children Brian (Jaime) Hagel, Lorie (Brad) Stelter, Greg Hagel (Sarah Meszaros); grandchildren Cody, Kenna, Kailey, Carter, Parker and Olivia; siblings Estelle (Paul) Lauzon, Lionel (Cathy) Prefontaine, Joceline Prefontaine (Gary Broste); in-laws Alex (Valerie) Hagel, Ray (Marie) Hagel, Edward (Irene) Hagel, and Bill Schnitzler; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Liturgy of the Word will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 16, 2021 at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in Allan, SK. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Cemetery, as well as fellowship at the Parkland Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
