Lola Montgomery Johnston
On Sunday September 12, 2021, at Miramichi Lodge, Pembroke, we lost our beloved matriarch.
She was 105 years old.
Dear mother of Montgomery (Monty) Johnston (Joan Stulac) and Mary Pye (Ted Schnare). Much loved grandmother of Heather Johnston (Chris Kane), Stephanie Withall (Tony), Sarah Pye (Aaron Fowler) and Eliza Pye (Steve Dunn). Step grandmother of Rebecca Halchuk (Peter), Laura Maiorino (Nick) and Rob Schnare (Caitlin Leu). Proud and loving great-grandmother to Samuel and Rhys Fowler, Emma and Elizabeth Withall and Charlie Dunn; as well as Norah and Mae Halchuk; and George and Henry Maiorino.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gillan McLean Johnston, parents Graham and Jean Montgomery, granddaughter Katherine Johnston, brothers Lindsay Montgomery and his wife Isabel and Edwin Montgomery and his wife Iona, and daughter-in-law Joann Johnston.
She will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as many others, whose lives she touched in her long life.
Lola was a unique and courageous woman of great humour. She was a person of many talents: poetry writer, story teller, trickster, garage sale guru and stained-glass artist, to name but a few. An award-winning gardener, she beautified every space in which she ever lived. She made lasting friendships with people she met in her travels throughout the world. She loved her years in the alto section of Calvin church choir. She was rarely at a loss for words and she always knew how to make us laugh. She was also a dedicated nurse, who’s heart for helping and caring for others continued throughout her whole life and was an example to us all.
Special thanks to the staff of Miramichi Lodge, who were unfailing in their provision of dedicated and loving care to our GG Lola. Your kindness to her and to her family will never be forgotten.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at Calvin United Church, Pembroke on Friday, October 22, 2021 after 10:00 a.m. A service of remembrance will be held in the church at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment in Beachburg Union Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Malcolm, Deavitt & Binhammer Funeral Home, Pembroke. (In lieu of flowers, donations to Miramichi Lodge Foundation would be appreciated.)
