Lily Francis Head (nee Paul)
March 24, 1949 – February 27, 2021
It is with profound sadness that the family of Lily Head (nee Paul) announces her peaceful passing at the James Paton Memorial Hospital at the age of 71 with her devoted husband by her side.
She leaves to mourn with loving memories her husband of 54 years, Austin Head; her four dearly loved children Jody (Joanne); Kevin (Susan); Todd (Cindy) and Coralee (Gerry); her cherished grandchildren, Jonathan, Jessica, Aiden, Charlotte, Emily, Logan, Lucas, Olivia and Sawyer, and her precious great-grandchildren, James, Tyler, Jayden and Jonah.
Also leaving to mourn are her many siblings (Lily was the oldest of 13), their spouses and children, as well as her Aunt Mary, who was like a sister to her. Lily was blessed with a large and loving family who will miss her dearly.
Lily and Austin started their journey together at a very young age, but it was a journey that stood the test of time and will last an eternity. They met at a movie theatre where the movie didn’t matter – she caught his eye and captured his heart. Not only did they build a beautiful family together, but they stood side by side through every business venture (the most notable of which were the Bread Shoppe and Lily’s Landing in Gander); every carpentry project; and every fishing lodge expedition – they were truly a team.
Lily loved the outdoors, which is a big part of the reason that they spent some of the most wonderful years of their life together at Square Pond. She loved ice fishing; she loved nature; and she loved cultivating the property around their home. She loved the “look” of the water, but wasn’t much of a swimmer – she left that to her husband, children and grandchildren. She also loved her indoor activities on the quieter days, particularly knitting and quilting, and she has created some beautiful pieces that have been passed along to special people in her life.
She loved entertaining family and friends. She liked to have her home prepared and pristine for their arrival. She loved to cook for them and prepare their favorite meals or sweets. Every occasion was a reason to celebrate…especially with food. She even made sure that the birds had enough.
She cherished visits from her children as well as their daily phone calls. She regularly asked about her grandchildren and was always happy to see them or hear about their latest adventures, projects, recitals and sporting events.
Lily was a woman of great faith. She loved to attend church and be a part of her church community. It is in this faith that she found comfort in her most difficult days.
Lily was strong and she overcame two battles with cancer, however, ALS ultimately took her life.
Due to Covid restrictions, there will be a private funeral service on Monday, March 1, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. for invited family only at Stacey’s Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor Eric Oram. Interment will follow at Norris Arm North at 2:30 p.m., officiated by Pastor Eugene Head.
Flowers will be gratefully accepted or donations may be made in Lily’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or ALS Research. The family would like to express its sincere and heartfelt appreciation to the staff of James Paton Memorial hospital for their constant compassion, care and support for Lily, Austin and their family.
