Obituary of Lillian Anne (Smith) Gouthro, Glace Bay/ Reserve Mines
Surrounded by family on a peaceful Friday evening our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother was called to heaven.
Lillian Anne (Smith) Gouthro passed away on Friday, February 5th, 2021 at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Lillian was born on November 10th, 1932, but if you asked her until her 65th birthday, she would have told you she was born on November 9th, 1933. Despite being owed a year of old age pension, ma was not impressed to know she was actually a year older than she thought she was.
She was born in Borneo, Country Harbour, Guysborough County to Alex Smith and Lena (Malloy) Smith. Lillian was predeceased by thirteen brothers and sisters and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Lil was happiest when she was surrounded by her family. The tea pot was always on and she made sure that any visitors were, “as full as a tick” when they left. Lil loved her bingo games and never said no to a trip to the casino. In the last few years, some of her best times were her trips to Halifax to visit Dana, Parker, Jenny, Joe, Mark and Mia.
Lillian was predeceased by her husband of sixty-four years, Joseph Patrick Gouthro. Together Lil and Joe raised their family in Reserve Mines and shared many wonderful memories.
She is survived by her children, James “Peck”, Colleen (Danny) MacNeil, Anne (Brian Penney), Brian (Evelyn) and daughter in law, Carol.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Suzanne, JD, Jennifer (Joe), Jonathan, Dana (Parker), Allison, Dee (Amy), Ryan, Robert, Derrick, seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Beside her parents and husband, Lil was predeceased by her two sons, Darrell and Joey.
Our family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of 3 East for their care and compassion during this difficult time. Our sincerest gratitude goes out to John MacIntyre for his help and understanding.
In accordance with Lillian’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Glace Bay. A private burial will be held at a later date.
