Leslie John (Jack)’s Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear father; Leslie John (Jack) Elms at the age of 95 years at the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre on Saturday, June 19th, 2021. Born in Stone’s Cove, Fortune Bay, NL, Jack was the son of the late Alex and Stella Elms (nee Harris). He was also predeceased by his loving wife; Alma, baby daughter; Carolyn, brother; Cecil Elms, father and mother-in-law; Jim and Ada Williams, brothers-in-law; Les Legge, Bill Kenner, Charles Woodman, Roy Pitcher, Ron Reid, and sister-in-law; Shirley Woodman.
Jack leaves to mourn with many fond and loving memories his loving family members. He will forever remain in the hearts of his son; David (Barbara) Elms of Port aux Basques, NL, daughters; Brenda (Pat) Butt of Fredericton, NB Donna (Paul) Critch of Corner Brook, NL, Judy (Gerald) Mishaud of Corner Brook, NL, sisters; Joyce Kenner of Oklahoma, Norma Legge of Port aux Basques, NL, his special friend Clara Hatcher, 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, brother and sisters-in-law; Jasper (Florence) Williams, Ivy Pitcher, Bea Reid, plus a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends.
A very special thank you to his caretakers; Amy, Eileen and Marina and the doctors, nurses and staff at the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre for their loving care, concern and compassion given to Jack.
Jack was an avid fly fisherman who loving spending time at his cabin in Crabbes River. He worked for the Canadian National Railway for 40 years as a machinist and foreman and retired early to care for Alma when she became ill. He lived his life to the fullest and loved his nightly game of cards (growl). He will forever remain in our hearts as a kind and loving father. Thank you Dad for all you have done.
His famous words when we visited each night was “We should have a small drink now and game of cards. I’ll have one if David haves one” Our hearts are with you Dad. Jack was a veteran of World War II serving from 1943 to 1945 and reservist from 1950 to 1955 and he was a life long member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 11. He will be forever missed.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 22nd from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at East Haven Funeral Home Inc. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 23rd, at 2:00 p.m. from St. James Anglican Church, Channel-Port aux Basques officiated by Rev. Jane Allen. Interment to follow at St. James Anglican Cemetery, Barachois Hill, TCH. Flowers are graciously accepted and donations in Jack’s memory can be made to the charity of one’s choice.
