Leonard’s Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Leonard Franklin Smith announce his passing on
October 6, 2021. Leonard passed away surrounded by family and friends at Sir Thomas
Roddick Hospital in Stephenville at the age of 64.
Leonard was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Catherine Smith. He leaves to mourn with
loving memories, his brothers Harold Smith (Roslyn) and Brian Smith; sisters Bernadette
Harnett (Eugene), Valerie Smith-Whalen (Terry), Natalie Smith (Ivan), Kim Smith-Samms
(Dermot), Barbara Tobin (Andy), and Shelly Tobin (Jimmy); as well as nephews Colin Smith
(Christy), Chad Harnett (Eun Young Lee), Brandon Way, Dermot Samms, Dillion Samms,
Andrew Tobin (Cheryl Perrier), James Tobin; nieces Candace Tobin, Brandy Smith-Gaulin (Eric),
Myra Cummings (Lee), Tara Hynes (Shawn), Jennine Tobin (Troy Cramm), Catherine
Lawerence, Brittany Smith (B.J. Boudreau), and Tedra Tobin (Zack Smith); great nieces and
nephews; special life-long friends Theresa and Gary Tucker; along with a large circle of
extended family, friends, and colleagues. He will forever be remembered and missed by all,
especially his fur baby, Willow.
Leonard was more than just a son, brother, uncle, or friend. Those lucky enough to know him
will never forget him. He was a man whose cantankerous demeanor was just the wrapping for
his huge heart of gold. He could serve you a heaping helping of sass in one breath and offer you
the shirt off his back with the next. That heart of gold never shone brighter than when working in
his life’s calling as a registered nurse. His patients will forever remember him as a gentle soul
whose tender care brought them comfort during their most difficult times. If you were his patient
you were his family, too.
Even while ill, Leonard could be found doing the things he loved most: spending time with his
dog Willow, tending to his beautiful garden full of flowers, or playing bingo with his friends.
A special thank you to all the staff at Sir Thomas Roddick hospital in Stephenville for their
kindness and compassion throughout the years.
As per his wishes, he has been cremated. Friends and family may pay their respects at
