Obituary of Lawrence John Foster
22 February 1939 – 18 February 2021
Larry, a loving dad, grandpa, great grandpa, brother, uncle, and a good friend to many passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, with his family by his side on Thursday, 18 February, at the age of 81.
Born in Cranbrook, B.C., Larry spent much of his life outdoors exploring, hunting, gold panning, and camping in all the East Kootenays; with one of his favourite places being the St. Mary’s Valley.
Although an avid outdoors man, sports were also an important part of Larry’s life. Earlier on the focus being Fast Pitch where he was a competitive pitcher as well as a coach for the Woman’s Go-Go Girls Team. Later, his passion for golf grew well before his retirement, which made him a regular at the Kimberley Golf Courses and provided many opportunities for fun golf holidays south with his wife Barbara.
Larry’s first career was in the Forest Industry working at the Sawmill in Wycliffe and as a Faller. His final career was as an Industrial Painter at Cominco. Many hobbies and side jobs fulfilled his retirement years with him initially being known as the painter to call if you needed something painted, followed with him being known as “Foster’s Knives.” He specialized in making custom hunting knives but was readily available for repairs and re-working older knives of all types.
Overtime the backyard with the bird feeders, lovely flowers and vegetable garden became a beautiful sanctuary to spend time. With the addition of the grandchildren and great grandchildren he thrived as a grandpa and loved playing and teaching them about the outdoors.
He loved every moment of life and will be greatly missed by all.
Left to remember Larry with love, are his children Clayton (Krista) Foster and Marjorie Wilder, grandchildren, Jacqueline (Jamie) Smithson, Shailynn Foster, Becky and Ashley Wilder, great grandchildren, Everett and Whitney Smithson, Also, his siblings Steve (Linda), Foster, John Foster, Mary (Jim), Miller, Peter (Kathy) Foster, Jane (Bernie) Cote, Sheila (Brian) Macklin and Bill Volk and many nieces and nephews.
