Obituary of Laura “Billie” Hastie (nee Lorch)
HASTIE, Laura “Billie” (née Lorch) – Of the Elgin Manor, R.R.#1, St. Thomas, passed away at her residence on August 9, 2021, in her 95th year. Beloved partner of the late Erich G. Kerstan (2005). Dearly loved mother of Donna Dyson (John), and Phillip Hastie (Pam), all of St. Thomas. Step-mother of the late Edgar Kerstan. She was proud of her grandchildren, Graham Dyson (Kristin) of Hamilton, and Ben Hastie of St. Thomas, and her great grandchildren, Jonas Dyson and Charlize “Charlie” McPhee. Born in Detroit, Michigan, April 10, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Adolph and Audrey (née Scidmore) Lorch. Billie was a retired employee of Singer Controls/ Eaton Yale Ltd., St. Thomas. After her retirement, she became a student of painting and tried her hand with different mediums, making many longtime friends that shared her passion. She was also a former member of the Red Hat Society having a ‘hoot’ on many outings and events as ‘Empress of the Purple Pigment.’ A private family visitation was held at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160) and a private graveside service was held at Elmdale Memorial Park on Thursday, August 12, 2021. Flowers respectfully declined. Memorial donations to the Elgin Manor Recreation Fund, the MS Society of Canada, or the charity of one’s choice will be gratefully acknowledged. A heartfelt thanks to the nurses, PSW’s and recreation staff at Elgin Manor for their exceptional, compassionate care & ‘hugs’ throughout her journey this past 8 ½ years.
