Rick Lyons (born Kenneth Richard), age 51, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2021 at Hospice House in Fredericton, following a courageous 14-year battle with brain cancer.
Originally from Carrolls Crossing, NB, Rick joins his grandparents (Murdock & Martha Lyons; Turnie & Rita Beek). Rick is survived by Megan Stewart, his loving wife and partner of 25 years, parents Kenny and Minnie (Beek) Lyons, siblings Shawn Lyons, Janet (and Sonny) MacLaggan, Jacalyn Lyons (Kirby Albright) and in-laws Ian, Anne, Fiona (Mario Roberge), Huw (Nathalie Bourget), Andy Stewart. Rick is also survived by many nieces and nephews (Samuel, Dana, Randy, Isaac & Caleb MacLaggan, Derek & Alyssa Lyons, Dexter & Isaiah Albright, Alex & Morgan Cogswell, Sarah Lou Stewart) and too many wonderful aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends to name.
Rick, a graphic designer by trade, had a zest for life and a huge thirst for knowledge, music, film and current affairs. Even through multiple brain surgeries and years of treatment cycles, Rick maintained an amazingly positive outlook on life and continued to engage in these passions, always with an infectious smile, quick wit and a half-dozen or more books on the go. He adored sharing and debating his passions with friends and family, helping to expand their musical or informational journeys. You will be greatly missed Rick, but never forgotten.
Special thanks to Rick’s Extra-Mural and Palliative Care team, physiotherapists and OTs at the DECH and the multitude of doctors, nurses and other medical professionals in Saint John and Fredericton, who all helped in gifting us with 14 amazing bonus years to spend with Rick. Also a huge thank you to his ‘angel’ Grainne Ni Fhoighil (Connemara, Ireland) who helped to bolster Rick’s positive outlook in the end.
Internment will take place in Carrolls Crossing at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, the Fredericton Community Kitchens or the Fredericton Public Library. Or pay it forward and raise a glass or share your joy of food, music or conversation with a loved one in his honour. Personal condolences may be offered through www.chipmanfuneralhome.ca.
