Ken’ Roberts passed away peacefully at Southlake Health Centre on November 30, 2021 after a full and active life at the age of 88. Loving husband of May (nee Jones) and brother of Jewel Bockus and the late Norm Roberts; father of Sharon Joudrey (Jamie Magill), Donna McFadden (Dave), Gail Youden (Ivan); grandchildren Joanne, Laura (Corey), Gillian (Chris), Alex (Amy), Amanda, Meagan, Mitchell (Meagan) and great grandchildren Dakota, Owen, Logan, Ethan, Ella, Eric, Walter, Alistair, Charlotte and Mason.
Dad was born in Mt. Dennis in Toronto. He has shared many stories of what it was like growing up on Cayuga Ave. before his parents, Hilda and Alfred moved to Woodbridge, on Weston Rd. where he raised his young family with May on the farm. He worked at Moffat for a few years before spending most of his career with the York Region District School Board in the maintenance department. He retired in the early 90’s a while after moving to Newmarket in ’79. He and May spent weekends at their trailer in Victoria Harbour and Balsam Lake for many years.
Dad was a softball pitcher (he played with Dynes Jewellers in Richmond Hill in the early days), hockey player, golfer, bowler, snowmobiler, boater, water skier and he did very well at the horseshoe pitch. He was a resourceful handyman around the house, and able to create beautiful woodwork and metal creations out of scraps in his home workshop.
In his more recent years, he loved bicycling and hiking on the Newmarket trails. He was an avid user of Facebook and video messaging, and loved the connection with his family and friends that it provided. He paid heed to his daily steps shown on his Fitbit and always ramped it up on his treadmill if he was falling behind his target.
Dad will be remembered for his love of life, especially his love for May, his family and friends who he held close in his heart, as we will always hold him in ours.
Special thanks to the staff in palliative care at Southlake Health Centre for the care and comfort they provided to him and to us.
For those who wish, condolences and donations to the Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation may be made at www.roadhouseandrose.com.
A private memorial service will be held late in the week of Dec. 6.
