It is with great sadness we announce the loss of our beloved Kazmir Gerard Kananowicz.
Kaz passed peacefully with his love Christine Halvorsen by his side following a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 59. Before he passed, he believed in the four noble truths of Buddhism, knowing that God didn’t save him, but science could.
Kaz lived his life with the motto “irritate and educate” and oh did he do just that. He was passionate about science, history, and culture. He was a dedicated working man who loved his job. Kaz pursued various careers: casino manager, Benedictine monk, FedEx server tech support, ERP tech support, insurance broker support in vehicle insurance. From his casino experience, Kaz wanted to thank Suche for rendering justice and Clark Sinnot for mentoring him on his path toward the CGA designation. Kaz entered a Benedictine Monastery on 9/11 but he couldn’t reconcile Matthew 25 and returned to Winnipeg to pursue a career in information technology. He also wanted to thank another mentor, Clayton, for believing that he could drink 16 rye and cokes and show up for work the next day in the tradition of Vladimir Visotsky. Kaz also wanted to thank his mentor Allan at ADS for helping the most organized disorganized person he knows. Sweet Marilyn is another person Kaz wanted to thank for her guidance and mentorship during his career in insurance.
One of his favorite pastimes was karaoke and hosting karaoke nights with family and friends. He was a social butterfly who made friends everywhere he went and was always willing to share his knowledge and ideologies with anyone whether you liked it or not. Above all else, he adored and cherished the love of his life Christine and their pup, King.
Kaz was predeceased by his mother, Filomena Kananowicz; his father Joseph Kananowicz; his aunt, Elizabeth Barker; his cousin Christopher Barker; his grandparents: Kazmir Burdzy & Frances Tabor. He is survived by his wife Christine Halvorsen, along with her daughters, grandchildren, and extended family.
We would like to send special thanks to the emergency, physio and especially the D4 staff at HSC for all the excellent care they provided Kaz during his stay. Christine would also like to express her immense gratitude to her family and close friends for the endless support and love during this extremely difficult time.
A Celebration of life – “Karaoke for Kaz” will be held on Oct. 16/21.

I’m so sorry Christine ; I was stunned to hear of Kaz’s passing. I fondly remember Kaz singing in Spanish. He was a unique person who I found really engaging. I will miss him terribly. I really hate cancer. I lost 3 family members to this dreadful disease. Marc M
I knew Kaz when we were children. We went to Brock Corydon school together. We collected coins as a hobby and we used to regularly visit banks asking the tellers if they had specific items. We were just children – but we must have been such a pain the in neck to them! We played together as Children do. He lived on Campbell Street, I on Ash. I met his Mother and his Grandmother even. His mother drove a Blue Acadian. We all went to the Red River Exhibition together many years in a row. I still have a button with a picture of the two of us on it. I knew him as a young man too. He liked the band Kiss, while I was mad for Queen. We both like history and making models and used to shop at a place called Keystone Hobbies. Which was run by a nice man named Bill Lopston – who we both became friends with. We both got into board games and used to hang out together at a place called Pendragon. When I was attending University of Manitoba, he rode his Harley while he worked at a bingo place then.
I left Winnipeg after the death of my Mother and we lost touch as happens sometimes. Today something prompted me to seek out my old childhood friend and I learned he died last year.
I am so very sorry to learn of this. I quite liked Kaz all those years ago.
