Following a two-year battle with cancer, it is with a heavy heart the family of Katelyn Melita Grace Lohnes, 28 (Halifax, formerly from Lunenburg, NS), announces her passing surrounded by loved ones on the afternoon of October 19th, 2021 at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax.
Katelyn was born on July 22nd, 1993, to Kevin and Sandy (Mosher) Lohnes of Lunenburg, NS. She grew up in Garden Lots and attended Centre Consolidated School and Parkview Education Centre. Katelyn was faithfully employed by her father during her early years of life in the Bounce-Around business with countless hours of helping with events, making animal balloons, and selling cotton candy. After several years working in retail (Foodland, Toys “R” Us, Lush Cosmetics, and Starbucks), she graduated from NSCC with a diploma in Therapeutic Recreation and went on to work at Kinross Hall in Parkland at the Lakes in Dartmouth, NS.
Katelyn had a passion for life and was always eagerly making plans for future endeavours. Her sense of humour never failed to put a smile on your face or bring tears to your eyes. She was a previous member of the Hill N’ Dale 4H club and an active member of the 10,000 Carrots Rabbit Rescue. She was a passionate supporter of animal rights and a devoted vegetarian. Katelyn enjoyed collecting vintage toys and dolls, crafting needlepoint, and crocheting. She loved to cook for her family and friends and was always up for trying new creative dishes. Her Saturdays were often spent with her wife and father sifting through yard sales and thrift stores to find her treasures. Katelyn loved to travel to the States with her wife and in-laws, as well as visit her family on the South Shore.
Katelyn was a strong advocate for Canadian Blood Services and Stem Cell Donation. She used her experience to increase awareness and be the voice for others battling this terrible disease. Katelyn was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in November of 2019. She received a stem cell transplant in June 2020 and was struck with a secondary diagnosis of B-Cell Lymphoma in May 2021. She faced each complication head-on with her wife Mallory by her side. Her strength and courage were unmeasurable and unrelenting. Katelyn never gave up hope and was always talking about better days ahead.
Katelyn is survived by her loving wife Mallory Wilson, sister Jessica Lohnes, and parents Kevin and Sandy Lohnes. She will be lovingly remembered by her parents-in-law Heather and Bill Wilson, brother-in-law Sam Wilson, Aunt Carolyn (Paul Fitzpatrick), Aunt Marie and Uncle John Reynolds, Aunt Wanda Finigan, as well as cousins, numerous relatives, and friends. Katelyn was predeceased by her grandparents Everett and Dorothy Lohnes and Jean Mosher. She had a love for animals will be dearly missed by her dogs Angus and Julia, as well as her six rabbits.
In honor of Katelyn’s love for Halloween, please join her family and friends in a Halloween-themed celebration of life at the Blockhouse Firehall (510 NS-325 Blockhouse, NS B0J 2E0) from 1-3pm on October 31st, 2021. Please wear the colors orange and black. Covid precautions will be followed, masks must be worn and proof of vaccination will be required to attend.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to all the staff at the Victoria General Hospital, QEII Health Sciences Centre, and VON for their care and compassion throughout Katelyn’s journey. A specific thank you to Dr. Frank MacDonald and Dr. Jamaledin Gharavi for their dedicated care. The family is forever grateful to Heather Wilson and Doug Crosby for going above and beyond to make sure Katelyn made it to every appointment and the countless hours of quality time spent by her side. She will be missed by many.
