Obituary
WAMBEKE, Julie – It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of Julie Wambeke on Nov 17, 2021. After reaching 101 years, you have finally been released from your earthly suffering, free to arrive in your heavenly home to live with the Lord. The last few months haven’t been easy, but you soldiered on stoically and without complaint, thanks to the caring Community Palliative Team and the amazing staff at Hospice. You all helped Julie live her last few months with dignity, and in spiritual and physical comfort. A special thank you to Mary Ellen, Doreen, and Eileen for visiting and bringing Julie Holy Communion daily over the last few months. Left to mourn are daughter Bea (Brian), grandchildren Julie (Mike), Keith (Kelsa), Ashley (Connor), Jenny (Momchil), Naomi, and great-grandson, Theodore. Also, many good friends at Northwood and in the community.
Julie was born on the 15th of 17 children in 1920 in Delmas Sask. Growing up, she was happiest riding horses and running through the endless rural wheat fields. When it came time to wash the many dishes that would accumulate feeding all those children, Julie would develop a severe case of “dishpan diarrhea” (her words) and would mysteriously disappear! Julie’s mother Evelyn instilled in her a deep faith in God, and in her fellow man. She always tried to see and bring out the best in others. At 17, she entered the convent with her older sister Jeanette, where she completed her education and became a french and biology teacher, working at various schools throughout AB. and Sask. with her final 2 years as principal at St Vital School in Battleford. She left religious life after 20 years and took a position teaching in High River AB, where she met and married a rancher, George Wambeke. They had one daughter and shortly thereafter moved to Kelowna, where she made her home for her last 60 years. Julie’s life was dedicated to God, community, and family. She spent many happy hours cooking (but not doing dishes!) for weddings, funerals, fundraisers, and church events through ICC Parish. She rolled bandages to send to Mother Theresa of Calcutta, was a Girl Guide leader and Commissioner, and was instrumental in forming the Seton Center, the Edelweiss Echo Choir, and French Cultural Center. For the last 20 years, Julie managed the Pro-Life Thrift Shop, where she nurtured a large group of friends and volunteers who helped many in the community. Everyone who came through the door was welcomed- whether donating items, in need of a kind word, or a warm jacket, Julie and the wonderful volunteers had time to help. She was nominated three times for the Sarah Treadgold Woman of the Year award, winning in 2011 at the age of 91. Julie lived life with faith, grace, and selfless service to others. Connecting with others gave her the greatest pleasure. Her glass was always half full and if there was white wine in it, so much the better!
A Memorial Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Parish, 839 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna on December 10, 2021, at 11:00 am. COVID policies are in place, all are welcome.
