Judy passed away peacefully with her husband Jim by her side, on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at the age of 80 at Brucelea Haven in Walkerton. She leaves behind her devoted husband James Robert Brett of 60 years. Judy is survived by her three children: Carolyn Brett (David Pickering) of Etobicoke, Liz Carson (Peter) of Georgetown and James Brett of Toronto. She’s the proud Grandma of Kate (Nick), Brett and Heather. Judy is survived by her sister Vicki Kennedy of Selkirk, Manitoba, and sister-in-law Patsy Goulet (Maurice) of Castlegar, BC. She is predeceased by her parents Stephanie and Paul Jacobsen and her sister Jackie Clarke, all from British Columbia.
Born in Toronto, Judy’s family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba when she was a child. She met Jim in Winnipeg and they married on August 19, 1961. Judy worked for Investors Syndicate as a keypunch operator before starting their family. Disappointed by the outcome of her children’s haircuts, she attended Marvel Beauty School in Winnipeg and became the local home-based hairdresser, cutting and styling the community’s hair in her kitchen. Judy was also a Leader for Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT). In addition, encouraged by her husband Jim, she became a trophy winning bowler and curler. As Jim worked for Air Canada, the family was transferred twice. Residing in Lachine, Quebec in 1973, Judy continued to cut and style hair in her kitchen and once again was a Leader with the CGIT. After 1979, they resided in Georgetown, Ontario. There Judy became a Carlton Card Merchandiser, maintaining the greeting card department in many locations including Zeller’s, Woolco and independent stores. Upon their retirement in 1995, Judy and Jim moved to a Victorian home in Walkerton, Ontario where together they restored and furnished the family gathering spot with antiques that they collected.
Judy was known for: her baking, especially her pies, extended family dinners, open house Christmas parties and playing practical jokes on many neighbors until the loss of her eyesight in the late 1990s. She belonged to the Georgetown Horticultural Society and entered many flower arrangements, especially miniature ones. Over the years Judy loved her menagerie of pets: many cats, dogs, birds and even a lamb. You could find Judy in most places by the sound of her laughter as she loved talking to people and sharing a good story. She enjoyed music, having played the piano since childhood, and had once hired the newly formed band, the Guess Who, for a CGIT dance. Judy loved to play cards and attend auctions to collect china and unique cups and saucers. Most of all, she loved the time she shared with Jim, family and especially her grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of 2 South at Brucelea Haven in Walkerton, along with many others who spent time taking such wonderful care of Judy.
Cremation has taken place and there will be so services held.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated by the family. Cards available at Cameron’s in Walkerton (519-881-1273) Donations and condolences may also be made online at www.cameronfuneralhomes.com
