Joseph TW Shiu November 20 1932 July 9 2021

On July 9, 2021, Joseph (Joe) Shiu, beloved father, husband, and grandfather, passed away at age 88. He was born in Montreal in 1932 to parents Rev.C.C Shiu and Julia Shiu. Joe had 7 siblings, and spent his childhood in Nanaimo and New Westminster. At 18 he joined the Canadian Air Force in Ottawa, and was stationed in Europe with NATO. Settling in Victoria, B.C., Joe became a draftsman for the Highways Department working on many bridges on Vancouver Island and the B.C. mainland, including the Alex Fraser during his career spanning 32 years. Interested in many sports, Joe played and followed tennis, and was a lifetime hockey fan, whose favourite team was the Montréal Canadiens. He was a valued member of the Chinese Canadian Veterans, Victoria Racquet Club, and Chinese students baseball team. He is predeceased by his wife Priscilla, whom he loved dearly for their 32 years of marriage. He will be lovingly remembered by their two daughters, Joanne (Tim) and Caroline (Sean). Joe/ Uncle Joe/ Gung Gung, will always have a place in the hearts of his grandchildren, (Maia, Sophia, Keira, Tim, Jillian), his brother, his many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbours. Joe, your family loves you, and we will be forever grateful to have had you in our lives.

So many wonderful memories of Uncle Joe… family road trips, backyard badminton, and his random geography quizzes that I can still answer to this day (!). Sad to say goodbye, but happy that he’s reunited with beautiful and much missed Aunty Pris. Love to Joanne and Caroline and their families.

I was so lucky to have had Joe as my brother-in-law. He will be sorely missed – his thoughtfulness, kindness, sense of humour, his compassion for those less fortunate than him. He was an inspiration to all of us. I loved him very much but happy that he’s now reunited with my beautiful sister, Priscilla.

Grandpa Joe, Gung, was such a wonderful, insightful, part of our family. Dim Sum together will always be a bit incomplete without him at the table, though he’ll be in our heart held memories forever. We’ll miss seeing his gentle smile and the twinkle in his eyes. Much love and many prayers for all the family. May God grace you with joyful memories and peace of heart.
