Joseph Spurgeon Steeves
1935-2021
Joseph S. Steeves, 85, of Stoney Creek
passed away on April 3rd, 2021 at the Moncton Hospital with his loving
family by his side.
Joe was born in Lower Coverdale on
July 20th, 1935 the son of the late Joseph and Gladys (Steeves)
Steeves.
Farming was Joe’s passion and he loved
living on the farm. It was in his nature, being raised from a young
boy on the family farm. He met the love of his life, Doreen, and the
two were blessed to be married for 65 years. He first worked as a
milkman, then he and his wife Doreen moved the family to Stoney Creek
and started JoDreen Farm, raising beef cattle over 55 years ago. He
also worked for the Department of Agriculture. Being in the barn or
hay field was his favourite place to be. He took great pride in the
quality of beef he provided and did a lot of research into different
breeds, starting with Shorthorns and then later promoting and raising
mostly Simmentals. He was honoured to be inducted into the Simmental
Hall of Fame. He learned to appreciate the seasons and working the
land, gardening and growing the crops was all part of his routines, he
loved being outdoors. He was very active at the Albert County
Exhibition and was on the Board of Directors for several years. He
enjoyed travelling to all the fairs and exhibitions all over the
Maritimes and Canada and was known to attend the Royal Winter Fair in
Toronto where he purchased some of his prized cattle. He had the
privilege of being a judge at the Royal Winter Fair for 2 years in a
row which was monumental and a great achievement for him. He was a
leader in the 4-H club helping educate the young about agriculture. He
has shared his knowledge of farming with many generations and his
legacy will live on.
Joe had a love for the Lord; his
faithfulness was unwavering. He was a dedicated member of the Stoney
Creek Baptist Church where he was an Honorary Deacon and always
willing to jump in and help in any area of service for many
years.
His girls and grandchildren were his
pride and joy, very seldom would a conversation go without Joe telling
of all their accomplishments and you could tell how proud he was of
them all. His family was his everything and he felt so blessed to have
their support when his health started failing. He never went a day
without his family being by his side and helping him. He loved them
all so much. He would want everyone to remember his laugh and how he
enjoyed teasing. That little smirk when he was up to something we will
never forget. He is now at peace and walking beside his Heavenly
Father and we will see him again. Feeling Sorry for us, but happy for
him as he is out of pain and reunited with his loved ones that have
gone before him.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall
not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me
beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul.” Psalms
23:1-3
He will be deeply missed by his wife,
Doreen (Leaman) Steeves; daughters, Marcie Pauley (Donald) of Stoney
Creek, Marlene Gaunce (Peter) of Moncton and Heather Trenholm (Gary)
of Sackville; his 10 treasured grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by his sister-in-law, Barb
Cormier of Stoney Creek and brother-in-law, Kenneth Leaman of
Tetagouche, several nieces, nephews, by his church family and many
friends.
He was the last surviving member of
his immediate family. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his
son, Billy; sisters, Roberta, Vivian Lowell and Gwennie; brothers,
Rudyard, Gerad, Bud, and Charles.
