Obituary for Joseph Oswald Enright
The Lord is my shepherd… I shall not want… He restoreth my soul… I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
As we remember our Dad, Joseph Oswald Enright, we are reminded of his desire to recite this psalm every day. Scripture, faith, love of family and the embedded desire to show kindness and compassion– especially to those in struggle, were hallmarks of his character.
Born into a large Irish Catholic family of 8 children in the Ottawa Valley on January 9, 1930, our dad, affectionately known as Ossie, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2021, in Hamilton at the age of 91. He was surrounded by his beloved wife, Barbara Elizabeth and their six children, Julie, Bruce, Greg, Paul, Kevin and Beth.
Barbara, his partner of 63 years, was like Julie Christie to Omar Sharif in his favourite movie, Doctor Zhivago. They were destined to be together and became inseparable. He lived much of his life in gratitude because of her.
Perhaps his second greatest joy was the re-do of fatherhood with the birth of his 16 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. They offered him the chance to engage in social activities and share his perspective on an array of topics.
It is only fitting that his final mass be held this Friday, on the Feast of St. Joseph, his namesake.
This service will be held at our family parish, Canadian Martyrs in Hamilton. He will be laid to rest at St. Augustine’s Cemetery in Dundas. Unfortunately, due to COVID, these gatherings will be for immediate family only.
For those who knew “Old Oz,” you would remember him as a thoughtful man who delighted in deep meaningful conversation and whose sense of humour and wit were benchmarks of his personality.
We take comfort in knowing that our dad is with God, his family, and his two best friends, his dog’s Fanny and Molly.
