With much love and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Stanford (Stan) Dale Johnson into the arms of his loving Saviour on February 4, 2021. Stan will be remembered with love, admiration, and respect by his children Sheila, Luanne (Curtis), Marla, Dale, and by his grandchildren Heather (Jon), Cameron (Nora), Kari (Shaun), Mia, Hala, Alanna (Derrick), Grace (Ryan), Browen (Michael), Gareth (Alex), Kai, Noah, and Alexandra, and by his great-grandson, Theodor. He will be sadly missed by his sister, Maureen. Stan was predeceased by his loving wife, Louise, in 2019.
Stan was born and raised in the village of Strome, Alberta. He studied the electrical trade at SAIT in Calgary, and eventually became a Master Electrician. He married Louise in 1956 and they moved to Edmonton, where they raised their family. Stan established and ran his own commercial electrical contracting business, and completed hundreds of large contracts in Alberta and the Northwest Territories.
Stan strongly believed in volunteerism and in making contributions to the community and to his church. He also valued the preservation of heritage. Stan and his late wife, Louise were lifetime members of the Sons of Norway. As accomplished Scandinavian Folk Dancers, Stan and Louise established and led the Valhalla Junior Scandinavian Folk Dancers, a group that included several of their grandchildren. Stan shared his commitment for service and contribution with his children and grandchildren, who worked by his side at lutefisk dinners, in the Scandinavian Pavilion at Heritage Days, and at church events.
Stan’s most important priority was his family and he was thrilled with the announcement of each new grandchild. He taught his children to work hard, to take care of themselves, to get “the facts” and to make good choices. He was a wise and thoughtful counsellor, a mentor, and a willing manager and helper when a project was underway. Daily, Stan thanked God for his family, and he prayed for them all.
Stan’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Ryan O’Malley, Dr. Ingrid de Kock, and to the many caregivers who helped him through his last months. Stan’s family is grateful that Stan was the first resident accepted on opening day at the Roozen Family Hospice Centre, Pilgrim’s Hospice Society, and for the compassionate care provided during his short stay.
Due to the current pandemic, a family celebration will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Lutheran World Relief at www.clw.org/donate, Hope Mission at www.hopemission.com/donate, or to the Pilgrim’s Hospice Society at www.pilgrimshospice.com/get-involved/make-a-donation.
