Obituary of John James Whitehouse
WHITEHOUSE, John James – It is with great sadness that we announce that John J. Whitehouse, 91, passed away at Harbour View Haven, Lunenburg, on Wednesday, February 10, 2021. Born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, he was a son of the late John and Maude (Strickland) Whitehouse.
John was a lifelong educator, teaching throughout Nova Scotia and eventually retiring as Vice Principal of Hebbville Jr. High School in 1987. After retirement he remained busy as a highly sought education source, with numerous term projects and assignments as school administrator, teaching, night school, and the teacher’s resource centre, as well as many volunteer positions in the field of education. He was passionate about access to education for everyone.
John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lois (Darroch) Whitehouse; children, Gary (Cheryl) of Ingramport; Gil of Bridgewater; Glenn (Monica) of Bell’s Pt, Queen’s Co.; Jocelyn (Kerry) Naugler of Conquerall Bank and Paul of Halifax.
Also surviving are 7 grandchildren who knew him affectionately as “Daw”, Brandon Whitehouse (Nicole) and Jordan Whitehouse, Jessica Barry (Michael), Laura Whitehouse (Steph Beaton) and Logan Whitehouse (Gillian Peel), Darah Rivalin (Grant) and Benjamin Naugler.
He is also survived by 7 great grandchildren, Greyson and Ronan Whitehouse, Alexys Driscoll-Whitehouse, Nicholas, Jack and Max Barry, and Tommy Rivalin.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by brothers, Alphonse and Bernie; a sister, Catherine, in infancy. Surviving are sisters, Lois Carpenter, of Halifax; Eunice (Daniel) MacNeil, of Sydney River; Winnifred, of St. Catharines, ON; and Johanna Campbell, of Sydney; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank the staff of Harbour View Haven for their wonderful and compassionate care for John while he was a resident. Their kindness will be always remembered.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater. In accordance with John’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
