John Holstein (age 97) passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 10th at the Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home.
John was born in Hampton, SK, the youngest of 7 children. He joined the Army in 1942 and was sent overseas in 1945. On his return he married Verna Olson in 1950. John lived most of his working life as a carpenter in Yorkton, SK. In 1985 John and Verna, moved to Rosthern to be closer to their family. He was predeceased by Verna in 2009. John was blessed with good health, living in his own home and still driving at the age of 94. After some health issues, he joined the Mennonite Nursing Home “family” where he made many new friends with both staff and residents. John was always very sociable, often being described as a real ‘character’!
He is survived by his daughter, Sharryl Riekman and children Marla (Clay Sawka), Lee (Victoria) and Josh (Pippa) – Otis, and his daughter Terri (Larry) Owen and children Dustin (Paula) – Olivia, Kaitlin, McKenna, and Carmen (Scott Burrows) – Ethan and Chloe. John is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who all loved their Uncle Johnny! John was predeceased by his wife, Verna Luella Holstein; parents, Henry and Emelia (Koch) Holstein, and his six siblings.
A Private Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at Eigenheim Mennonite Church. The service will be livestreamed and the link will be available prior to the service.
The family would like to acknowledge the care that he received from the kind compassionate staff at MNH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of John to the Mennonite Nursing Home, Box 370, Rosthern, SK S0K 3R0.
