John Stephen Steeves
1961-2021
Steeves, John Stephen, age 59, of Westville, Pictou County,
passed away on March 4, 2021, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New
Glasgow.
John was born and raised in Crossroads Ohio Antigonish, one
of fourteen children of Peggy and the late Donald
Steeves.
John wanted to join the Army like his dad, a WWII vet, and at
18 he joined the Canadian Engineers as a demolition expert, rising
from Sapper to Corporal. He was posted to Alert, Chilliwack,
Gagetown, and Lahr, Germany, where his career ended with a medical
discharge at age 31, the result of a serious injury during a planned
bridge demolition.
John lived in Pictou
County where he restored a home in Westville. He loved to help his
many younger relatives, almost as much as he loved country music and
telling jokes.
John is predeceased by his dad
Donald and sister Jeannie.
He is survived by his mom, Peggy; and siblings, Donna (Angus)
Coutts, Claude, Rebecca, Gary (Marilyn), Lila MacLean (John Connors),
Linda (Dave West), Carolena (Andre Noel), Gordon, Mark (Debbie
Levere), Martha (Jerry) Gurney, Donald (Mandy Sharpe), and Kimberley
(Tim) Walker, Allison (Mike) Hennessey, and innumerable nieces and
nephews and their children.
Visitation will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm in
C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish.
Social distancing protocols must be followed, and masks are
mandatory. A private funeral will be held in St.
Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph, with a link to the service
available Tuesday afternoon on the funeral home
website.
The pallbearers are James Mosher, Garrett Steeves, Reid
MacKenzie, Scott MacDonald, Ryan Hennessey, and Mike
Hennessey.
The honorary pallbearers are Christopher Steeves, Chris
Moody, Brennan Steeves, Derek Steeves, Jonal MacDonald, and Eric
Mosher.
Burial in the parish cemetery in the spring.
