Obituary
CURRAN, John Peter – Passed away peacefully on Friday, November 5, 2021, at his home in Bracebridge, at the age of 79. Beloved husband for 55 years to Liz (nee Grady). Loving father of Jeff (Sharon) Curran, and Carolyn (Dan) Marion. Cherished grandad of Matthew and Rebecca Curran, and William and Charlie Marion. Dear brother of Linda Smith (the late Norm), and of the late Alec; brother-in-law of Jean (Pete) Skopec. John will be deeply missed by his extended family and friends.
John’s career as a CA spanned more than five decades, over which time his guidance and mentorship touched hundreds of people, if not more. It also afforded John and Liz the opportunity to visit many cities and countries around the world. He started his career with Touche Ross in Hamilton in late 1960’s, then to Calgary in 1978. In 1990, John joined Arthur Andersen and moved back to Toronto (Oakville) to lead the firm’s Insolvency Practice, finally retiring in September 2001.
Throughout his life, John was deeply involved in a number of charitable organizations; most notably Rotary Clubs in Calgary, Toronto and Bracebridge, serving as Treasurer at various times. He is a past president of the Muskoka Lakes Association and past Chairman of the Canadian Foundation of Compulsive Gambling. Upon retirement, John was invited to sit on the Audit Committees of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Industry Canada for a number of years.
John’s parents purchased a lot on Lake Rosseau (Royal Muskoka Island) in the late 1950’s and John never lost his love for Muskoka, later purchasing a property of his own two doors down from them. John’s perfect day started with coffee and the newspaper on the dock, followed by taking the grandchildren tubing, then to Port Sandfield for ice cream, sunset on the dock, steaks on the BBQ and going out for a putt in the boat to finish off the day.
In keeping with John’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of John’s Life will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at Port Carling United Church, with Rev. Sue Woods officiating. Please see the link below, for the live stream of John’s service.
In memory, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made out to the Port Carling United Church, South Muskoka Hospital Foundation, the Bracebridge Rotary Club, or a charity of your choice and may be arranged through Reynolds Funeral Home. Messages of condolence and photos may be shared at www.reynoldsfuneral.com

Death notice for the town of: Bracebridge, Province: Ontario
My deepest sympathies to Liz and family on John’s sudden passing from a rich life, which we saw in action during John’s involvement with and then at the helm of the Muskoka Lakes Association. It was in Muskoka, that we came to know la famille Curran in get-togethers at our respective cottages before John and Liz made made their new permanent home in Bracebridge.
Bon voyage to a very good man.
Scott Fairley and Eden Oliver.
