CARNIE, John Russell (Jack) of William Street, Stratford, passed away peacefully and comfortably at home on Saturday, June 19, 2021, surrounded by his family. Jack had endured a long-term battle with chronic major heart and vascular problems, and ultimately succumbed, aged 80 years, to a severe stroke.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Mary (Makins) Carnie of Stratford, his daughter Barbara and her husband Derek Quinlan of Oakville, their children Makaila and Sydney, his son Michael Carnie and partner Judy of Mississauga, his stepson Michael Kelly and his wife Mahsa of Burlington, their children, Elika and Eli, his stepmother Marion of Toronto, brothers James (and wife Dian), William (and wife Karen), and Ronald (and wife Tuppy). He will be truly missed by many other relatives in the Carnie and Makins families, as well as many neighbours and friends made over the course of his life. Jack is predeceased by his eldest child, a son, John Derrick Carnie as well as by his father Jack and mother Audrey.
Throughout his career of more than fifty-five years, from which he retired in 2011, Jack worked primarily in the toy and hobby industry, in a sales and marketing capacity, as a manufacturer’s representative supplying many major Canadian retail firms and accounts, as well as smaller retailers. Ultimately, he created his own business doing the same.
Jack received significant attention, including from the news media, for his unprecedented survival thanks to medical innovation of catastrophic cardiac issues, which without this, would have otherwise been fatal. As a result of this turn of events, Jack made many motivational presentations to Heart and Stroke Foundation volunteers and personnel to underscore the value of their work in light of his own experience.
Jack was renowned among those who knew him for his love of life, his engagement with others, his courage and resiliency, and his sense of humour and camaraderie.
