John Arthur Dyke
August 22, 1933 – February 14, 2021
With deepest sorrow the family announces the peaceful passing of John on February 14, 2021.
John (Dad) was born in Charlbury, Oxford, England on August 22, 1933. Son of Arthur Stanley Dyke and Edith Sarah Burt, and brother to Pamela, Bill and wife Maggie, and Susan. John married Anne (nee Thompson) in 1957 and emigrated came to Canada, settling in Ontario in bucolic Meadowvale where Jane was born, then Toronto where I was born and where they remained for 30 years. In September 1987 Mum and Dad moved to Nova Scotia, a province they had vacationed in many times and which they loved. A new home in Bayside was established and made warm for family and friends. July 2001, they relocated to Bedford Nova Scotia, starting another phase of life, new friends, new neighbours, and more fond memories. This phase of life brought them in daily contact with their beloved grandkids, great grand kids, neighbourhood kids and daughter and son-in-law, Jane, and Don. Dad had a passion for all things mechanical, woodworking and building ultimately influencing me in my chosen profession. He was an avid sportsman, golfer and enjoyed travel including road trips and visiting friends in the local pubs. He spent most of his professional career with Volvo first in Toronto then Halifax. Married for 46 years Mum and Dad always had each other. They traveled through these phases of life together. They came to Ontario from England, knowing no one, raised a family then came to Nova Scotia, readily developing new friendships along the way. For decades they loved and supported each other and raised a happy family. He will be missed.
Predeceased by loving wife Anne, caring father of Jane Burry and her husband Don Burry of Bedford, Nova Scotia, and of Andrew Dyke and his friend Terry of Toronto, Ontario. Proud grandfather of Chris and wife Kyla and adoring grandfather of Sarah. Doting great grandfather of Aidan and Ava and a friend to many. He will be missed terribly.
A private celebration of life memorial to follow.
In lieu of flowers the family would be grateful for a gift of remembrance to a charity of your choice.
The family wishes to acknowledge the love and support from friends and physicians and nurses at Halifax’s QEII and to John’s home care supporters, palliative care team, The VON and Halifax Hospice.
