Joan’s Obituary
GILLIS, Joan Mira Manetta ~ Age 85, of Middleton, formerly of West Dalhousie, Annapolis Co., passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2021, in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born on July 8, 1935, in Lake Pleasant, Annapolis Co., she was a daughter of the late Banford and Flora (Ernst) Acker. Joan was a hard worker all her life and never shied away from a challenge. She had been employed for 27 years at the Adult Residential Centre in Bridgetown, starting out as a cleaner, and advancing in 1981 to Food Services Supervisor after completing her diploma in this field. For 30 years Joan had been the organist at West Dalhousie United Baptist Church. She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society, having served as both President and Secretary. Joan had resided her last few years at Mountain Lea Lodge in Bridgetown. She was a kind and caring person who enjoyed cooking, quilting, knitting, puzzles, gardening. Joan was known for her infectious laugh and will be sadly missed and remembered by her family and friends. Surviving are her daughter, Deborah Gillis (Horst Loegler), Middleton; son, Malcolm (Dora) Gillis, Margaretsville; grandchildren, Jason and Aaron Banks; Katrina Jamieson; great granddaughter, Oakleigh; sisters, Marguerite Toole, Grand View Manor, Berwick; Muriel Sams, Dartmouth; Marlene (Ben) Simard, Annapolis; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Edwin L. Gillis; sister, Elena Dreger; brothers, Leo, Sherman, Frelan and James Acker. A memorial service took place at 2 p.m., Tuesday, August 24, in West Dalhousie United Baptist Church. Pastor Herb Anderson officiated with interment in West Dalhousie United Baptist Cemetery. Family flowers only; donations in her memory may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia, Diabetes Canada or to West Dalhousie United Baptist Church Building or Cemetery Fund.
