Joan was predeceased by her parents Helmer and Flossy Fisk (nee Barnard); husband Hans Ruck; partner Allan Fenneman; grandson Brian Newman; great granddaughter Jayda Nelson; and stepson Wayne Ruck.
Joan was born on October 17, 1944 in Rainy River Ontario. In 1963 she married her husband Roger Nelson and raised their children in Bergland, Ontario. In 1971 they moved to Camp Robinson, Ontario where they lived until 1980 in a company owned bush camp. While living in the very small rural area she drove school bus and was the head post mistress. In 1980, with three teenage children, a black lab and grey kitty in tow, they moved to Hinton for work. While in Hinton, she worked in store for Hinton Lumber. Shortly after she received her class 1 license and began driving the delivery truck as well. In 1981, she was awarded a job at Cardinal River Coal and became the first Unionized woman on site. While working at Cardinal River Coal, she worked her way up from coal haul driver to working in the plant. She also served on the UMWA International Woman Coal Miners Committee until she retired in 2004. She was fortunate enough at the time to travel the world. She worked with the seniors club endlessly. Joan and her partner Frank enjoyed floor curling, crib tournaments and travelling to the Alberta Seniors games and volunteered many hours for different organizations. Joan had a huge love for life and adventure.
Her extreme and unconditional love for her family will forever live on in our hearts and will be missed terribly by many.
