Harold James (Jim) Saunders
July 7, 1943 – 26 April 2021
Jim passed away rather suddenly at the age of 77 in Toronto. He was admitted to Etobicoke General Hospital on April 22 after a fall at his apartment in Rexdale and was subsequently diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus, passing away quietly four days later. He was a fiercely independent person who was not particularly outgoing in large groups but who could be incredibly witty and pleasant in smaller settings, and was very much admired and liked by all who knew him well.
Born and raised in Brockville by parents Margaret and Harold Saunders, he and his younger brother Gerald (Gerry) lived in the same house on Edgewood Avenue throughout their entire childhood. Indeed, Jim always thought of and called Brockville home, even though he lived at various times of his life in Montreal, Waterloo and Toronto. He would frequently journey back to Brockville to visit with his parents and continued to keep up the homestead even after it became necessary for his mother to move to Maple View Lodge in Athens.
Jim graduated from the then Brockville Collegiate Institute and Vocational School (BCIVS) and went on to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering from Queens University, which he put to good use with the National Cash Register Company (NCR) in Waterloo and later as a Certification Engineer with the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) in Rexdale. In fact, he once related that, at one time, in his position with CSA he was asked to review a submission for certification of a project that he had worked on previously at NCR.
In his retirement, he spent many hours capturing and documenting images of great art works from around the world in a virtual museum of his own creation. Although his business travels had taken him to many locations (Scotland, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, etc) that most of us can only dream about, he was not want to do a lot of travelling in retirement, not even to the quaint lobster fishing village on the Bay of Fundy where his only brother resides.
He was predeceased by his father Harold and his mother Margaret and is survived by his brother Gerry (Linda) and his niece Heather and nephew Geoffrey as well as grandnephew Quinton and grandnieces Olivia and Mikaylah. Cremation is taking place and he will be interred with his mother and father at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Jim’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.
