Obituary of Jean Ahenakew
Jean Gloria Ahenakew
November 8, 1945 ~ January 6, 2021
We are saddened to announce the passing of Jean Gloria Ahenakew, 75 years old. Jean passed away at home in Prince Albert, SK on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, after a long fight with cancer.
Jean was born in Winters Lake, SK near Debden, SK on November 8, 1945, to Myles and Eva Isbister. She was one of the younger of her many siblings. At an early age, Jean knew her calling. In 1967, she graduated from the nursing program at the Holy Family Hospital and was the class valedictorian. She spent many fulfilling years at the Holy Family, working her way up to head nurse on the surgical ward. She continued to further her education, completing her BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) degree and a Northern clinical program with great distinction. Jean finished her long career in health care as home care coordinator with Prince Albert Grand Council and Director of Nursing with Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation.
Jean enjoyed many sports throughout the year, including softball, bowling, and golfing. On weekends, she could often be found in front of the television, cheering on her beloved Tiger during golf tournaments.
In her retirement years, Jean and her husband Arnold loved to be “snowbirds” and head down to their retirement community in Wellton, Arizona. She remained active all her life, enjoying walks along the riverbank. Jean was also an avid reader and enjoyed more than a few good page-turners. She always treasured visits with her daughters, sisters, and grandchildren alike, as well as long-time friends from her Holy Family days. Jean was a constant source of strength, wisdom, and inspiration to her family and friends and will be sorely missed.
Jean is survived by husband Arnold; daughters: Lori Ahenakew, Rayleen Parenteau, Trudie Ahenakew; grandchildren: James Ahenakew, Kristen Ahenakew, Miranda Parenteau, Marisa Ahenakew, Kamron Parenteau, Paige Bellegarde; great-grandchildren: Aiden Ahenakew, Alex Ahenakew, Ariston Ahenakew; sisters: Ethel (John) Isbister, Pansy (Paul) Ahenakew, Loret (Fred) Sasakamoose, Leona (Cliff) Ahenakew, Lillian Isbister; her brothers Arnold (Karen) Isbister and Sandy (Jennifer) Isbister; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Jean was predeceased by parents Myles and Eva Isbister; sister Doreen Isbister; brothers: Wesley Isbister, Clarence Isbister, Wilfred Isbister, Myron Isbister, Ralph Isbister, Dennis (Yvonne) Isbister, Kenny (Edna) Isbister and Bud Isbister.
