Jean’s Obituary
With heavy hearts, the family of Jean Mavis Arkles (nee Delderfield) of Moose Jaw is announcing her peaceful passing surrounded by her family in Chilliwack, B.C. at the age of 93 on Friday, June 18, 2021. Jean will be lovingly remembered as a woman who adored her husband Joe and family with her whole heart, actively worked to better her community, and always had her door open for friends, family, and neighbours to share tea and her famous lemon loaf. Jean was born December 22, 1927 in England and was a proud Londoner and citizen of the United Kingdom. Jean survived World War II during which time she met Joe Arkles, a handsome Canadian solider, at Wembley Arena. After marrying Joe in June 1946 and becoming a war bride, Jean came to Canada making her way to Arcola, Saskatchewan. Jean was strong, fierce, and had boundless willpower exemplified by her early days during the war and in Saskatchewan. After settling in Moose Jaw, Jean and Joe built a life around involvement in their community, including a lifelong passion for the Canadian War Brides, Anavets, Cub Scouts Canada (Cub Leader – Akela), and sports. Jean loved shuffleboard and travelled around the province playing in tournaments. In addition to her community involvement, Jean ran the classified section of the Moose Jaw Times Herald becoming well known throughout the business community, which she also frequented as an avid shopper. Jean and Joe had two sons, Brad and Greg, who Jean was exceptionally proud of and became involved in all of their afterschool activities. Through her community involvement and children, Jean had many, many friends who she entertained in her pristine backyard and home. Jean also loved her pets – Timmy, Kitty, and Casey, a name now passed on to other family dogs. Jean was a pillar of her community both in official capacities and in her deep care for those she loved. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, generous and patient grandmother, fierce advocate, loyal friend, and baking extraordinaire. Jean’s smile always lit up the room, and her loss has left a hole in the hearts of those who loved her. Jean was predeceased by her husband Joe; father Albert William Delderfield; mother Frances Keal; brothers Doug and Geoff; and sister in law Gayle. Her memory and love lives on in her children Brad (Deanne) and Greg (Debbie); grandchildren Tony (Karen), Jillian (Michela), Taylor (Dan); Keilann; Alexa; and Natasha (Kelsey); great granddaughter Charlotte; sister in law Maureen; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff at The Cascades Care Community in Chilliwack, B.C. for their care for Jean, especially in the last days of her life. The funeral service will be at St. Aidan Anglican Church, 124 First Ave N.E., on Monday, July 12, 2021 at 1:30pm. Reverend Deacon Arlene Champion will precede. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Memorials to the Moose Jaw Humane Society, Box 1658, Moose Jaw, S6H 7K7 in lieu of flowers would be appreciated. In living memory of Jean, a memorial planting will be made by Jones-Parkview Funeral Services.
