Jean passed away peacefully on April 29th, 2021 in her 102nd year at Brierwood Long Term Care. “Jean Jean the Dancing Machine”, a term of endearment bestowed on her by her loving children, Beverley Kelly and Donna Cottrell (Tim). Jean was the treasured grandmother of Michelle McCormick (Ryan) of New York and precious great-grandmother of Matthew McCormick. She was predeceased by her husbands, Donald Greiner, Ronald Hainer, son Richard and sons-in-law Terry Cottrell and Bill Kelly. Fondly remembered by her step-daughters, Susan Mercer of Calgary and her children Jennifer and Brook and Debbie Cox of Burlington and her children Stephanie and Christopher, her daughter-in-law Carol Greiner (Pat), nieces Barbara Cullen and Jeanette McBride and her
Treasured friends Judy Brake and Christine Annis.
Jean lived through two pandemics, a world war and the great depression. She attributed her longevity to never feeling her age, a positive attitude, a great sense of humour, eating a lot of salmon, and partaking every day in her 4 o’clock happy hour. She enjoyed music, playing the piano by ear, following American politics, Tiger Wood’s career and Dave Soulier’s band from Legion to Legion on Saturday nights where she danced the night away in her high heeled shoes that showcased her great legs.
Jean was not only a wonderful and supportive mother to her children but a great pal to them, attending most of her children’s social functions where she was always the life of the party and the most popular person in the room, especially with the men with whom she loved to flirt.
When she was in her late eighties while visiting her daughter, Beverley out west, Jean went for a stroll to the corner store. When she didn’t return in the allotted time, Beverley became very concerned only to have her concern interrupted by a loud roaring sound coming from the driveway. When Beverley stepped outside to investigate she saw Jean on the back of a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Jean explained, “I got lost, so I asked a biker to give me a ride home.”
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Brierwood Long Term Care for their constant care and compassion which will long be remembered by the family. Arrangements entrusted to the Toll Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. If wished, expressions of sympathy to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. www.tollfh.ca
