Obituary
On February 24,2021 Jean Ellen Birnie beloved sister and aunt passed away at Grace Hospice in Winnipeg at age 70. Jean was born in Neepawa MB on June 6, 1950 the oldest daughter of Roy & Stella Birnie.
Jean was involved in music, sports, 4-H, Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT), and was selected as a Centennial Exchange student. Graduated from Neepawa Area Collegiate Institute (NACI) in 1968. She moved to Winnipeg and worked for Manitoba Hydro. During the fall of 1969 she moved to Yellowknife, NWT to work for the Government of the Northwest Territoies until the fall of 1971 when she left to tour Europe. Upon return in 1972 she settled in Edmonton,AB working for Superior Steel Desk Mfg. Co. Ltd. and then moved to Winnipeg spring 1974 when they opened a new branch.
Jean enrolled in the Military with the Air Reserves on May 7, 1974 and in the fall left Superior Steel Desk and worked full time with the Military. She retired from 1Canadian Air Division Headquarters, 17 Wing Winnipeg MB. on May 7, 2010. She attained the rank of Master Warrant Officer and was awarded with the Canadian Forces Decoration 2nd Clasp Medal, United Nations emergency Forces II Medal, 125th Anniversary Medal and Canadian Forces Peacekeeping Service Medal.
She did a tour in Egypt and temporary duties in Europe,many parts of Canada and the Territories, the Dewline and numerous other countries.
After Jean retired she enjoyed her summers at Wasagaming, MB working around the cabin and visiting friends and relatives at the the cook shacks. She loved her time on the lake kayaking and spending time with her “best buddy” Cookie. She enjoyed travelling during the winter months and loved visiting family.
Jean enjoyed attending sporting events, University & RCMP Grads of her nieces, nephews & great nieces and nephews.
We are so grateful for her peaceful transition and find solace knowing she will forever remain in our hearts, memories and dreams.
Jean was predeceased by parents Roy & Stella, sister-in-law Carolyn(wife of Bonar), and other relatives & friends.
She will be forever remembered and missed by brother Bonar (Jackie), children Cole(Mary)children Serenity & Kingston; Renee (Shayne)Theriault, children Shaun, Zoe, Brianna & Brandon. Brother Bob (Nina), children Laura Lee Shearer, children Chelsea, Stacey & James; Tana(Greg) Squires, children Brendan & Mason. Brother John(MaryJo) children Sheldon(Clara), children Jack & Stella; Alisa (Greg)Mayberry, children Winnie & Olive; Ian; Jaydn. Sister Alice .
The family would like to thank the staff at Pallitive Care and Grace Hospice for all their dedicated time spent with Jean.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice or to Friends of Riding Moutain National Park in Jean’s name.
