It’s with deep heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Jean (Mersereau) MacPhail on Wednesday January 13, 2021, at the age of 95 years. Jean was a beloved and loving wife, mother, grandmother (Grammy), Sister, Aunt, Cousin and friend.
Jean was born in Chatham N.B. and grew up on the Miramichi River in Blackville NB. She lived most of her life in Scarborough ON with her husband, daughter, granddaughter. She was the daughter of the late Charles Burton (Burt) and Jane (MacDougall) Mersereau.
Jean starting working before she was allowed at the local store, under her sister’s name, and never stopped , working in NB, northern Ontario and Toronto , where she worked for Toronto Metro News until she retired at 65 years.
She was kind and humble with an infectious zest for life, wit, charm and style that made you smile. With those few well placed words, little joke to make you laugh, a little dance (she loved to dance) and that twinkle in her eyes. She believed in doing the right thing, working hard at the things you do, and most all to leave people with a smile, you never know what life has in store.
Jean’s family was her life ,from her immediate her husband Lanny who she would dance the night away with, her daughter Natalie who she loved dearly, her granddaughter Sophia that the sun rose and set on, to her siblings, many niece’s and nephews, great niece and nephews, and great great nieces’ and nephews. Travelling “down home” every summer and a lot of Christmas’s to be with family. She read the Toronto Star every day, checking the weather for each city where family reside and the sports page to read up on the game “her boys” played the Toronto Maple Leafs. Which she always seemed to be able to correctly predict if they would win or lose. “Where’s Jeanie?” could be heard at social gatherings with friends, because you knew she brought a delicious goody to eat and you would have a laugh.
She will be missed by many and cherished in our hearts forever, the last of her siblings to pass we thank you for the music, songs, stories and laughter; the lesson you taught us; integrity you showed us, and the love you shared and gave. May we do you proud to caring it on.
(Don’t cause to much of a ruckess up there, we don’t want Granddaddy saying “hush now.“)
Jean is survived by her husband Lawrence (Lanny), daughter Natalie, (Ricardo Ferreira) and granddaughter Sophia, her sister in-law Vera, her brother in-law Albert as well as many nieces and nephews, great nieces’ and nephews that loved her.
