Obituary of James Walter Brown
James Walter Brown age 77 of Ivey’s Terrace, Trenton passed away on Saturday, May 8th, 2021 at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in New Glasgow he was a son of the late Walter Bernard and Edna Jean (Chisholm) Brown. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Trenton.
He is survived by his wife, the former Sharon Horne, Trenton; daughters Darlene (Jeffrey) Turnbull, New Glasgow; Kimberly (Kevin) Austin, Alberta, Sharalee (Brad) Fraser, Eureka; four grandchildren; Karleigh (Abel) Nita, British Columbia, Kurtis Turnbull (Meaghan Carlson), Ontario; James Fraser, Eureka and Eliza Austin, Alberta.
He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Edna, a sister Betty Chisholm and brother Fraser Campbell.
Jim (Dad) was raised in Trenton and lived there most of his life. From working at the car works then travelling to Teachers College in Truro, he eventually began teaching in Halifax and New Glasgow. He went on to teach at East Pictou Rural High from 1974 until retirement in 1996. He returned to the car works for a few years before fully retiring.
Teaching Industrial Arts, he took on “tin shop” & “wood shop”, both requiring a great deal of patience (and nerves of steel). As much as he enjoyed teaching, his favourite things were a good storm day and counting the days until retirement. He retired with a full pension at the young age of 52 after 30 years, something he was very proud of.
He loved the outdoors. Whether in a canoe or on the bank of a brook, he was always ready to fish. In the Spring he had his favourite spots to forage chanterelle mushrooms or fiddle heads. He loved gardening and passed on those skills to his girls. In his younger days, he was often found on the ice for hockey or on the ball field in Trenton. The crack of the bat on a warm summer night could be heard from our house, this will be forever in our memory. After retirement he took to the golf course. Crib was his favourite card game, which he enjoyed playing with his son -in -laws.
He was always ready to turn his hands to any tasks whether building cabins at Big Lake Camp or undertaking renovations at home or for fellow teachers, friends and family. All of us have pieces of his woodwork to remember him by.
In addition to his patience, he was a quiet gentle man who loved his family more than anything. He was very proud of his three girls and his four grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all.
Our family wishes to thank the staff at Ivey’s Nursing Home. We know you are grieving along with us, you were his family as well. Thank you to the Aberdeen Hospital Emergency staff for their kindness in Dads last hours. We miss you already Dad. “We love you too”.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions there will be no visitation or service at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date with burial in Hillside Cemetery, Trenton.
