FERR, James –
1960 – 2021
Unexpectedly, on Saturday, September 25th, 2021 at Ajax Pickering Hospital in his 62nd year. Jim passed with his family by his side at the “magical hour” during a spectacular sunset. Jim loved his life: his family, his job, his colleagues, his friends. He loved the arts: music — from classical to jazz to RUSH, theatre — both onstage and tech, and Nikon photography. You never saw Jim without his camera. He loved travel, astronomy, and all things nerdy: Star Trek and Star Wars. An avid sci-fi reader, he would read a book in a day if he was left alone to his own devices.
Jim has supported Apple technology for over half his lifetime. He coded a computer bulletin board system, Warp Six, that is still in use over 30 years later. Jim worked for Apple Canada from 1988 to 2001 when he found his dream job at Durham College assisting students, faculty, and staff with all things Mac. His passion was helping others with learning and creativity. Generous with his time, his reward was knowing a problem was fixed, a roadblock shifted, the “got it” moment on a student’s face. Jim’s work colleague of 20 years summed it up best when he said: “Jim was the embodiment of Scotty from Star Trek for Media, Art & Design. He kept the engines running, was technical advisor to Captain Kirk, had a logical and pragmatic approach, and was a friend to all.”
Jim leaves behind his adoring wife Alexandra, proud daughters Laura (Stephen) and Allison Hooper (Micheal). Cherished by his mother Carol Lawson, sister Gail Leutert (Jeff), and brothers John and Greg. Much loved by the Savage family. He will be forever missed by his lifetime friend and best man Dan Mulvihill.
Cremation has taken place. Details of how to contribute in Jim’s memory will be posted shortly.
Jim, you are truly a bright star in our universe. Godspeed.
