James’ Obituary
NORMAN, James Allan – November 30, 1983 to October 14, 2021
It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of our son, Jamie, 37, in Calgary, Alberta, on October 14, 2021. Jamie was the son of Cheryl and Tim Norman-Martell, Middleton, and Carl Elliott, Amherst.
If you asked Jamie where he was from, he would tell you “The Valley”, calling Greenwood, and later Middleton, home, because that where “The Folks”, his parents Cheryl and Tim, were. From an early age, Jamie loved sports, competition and the chance to win or be first. He played hockey, baseball and basketball, earning the nickname The Flash for his lack of running ability. He found his stride with Tae Kwon Do and went to the Nationals, coming 2nd overall. Jamie was also born with a love for food, eating and cooking, enjoying the presentation of the food he would make as much as making or eating it. He loved his steaks still mooing, chocolate, desserts, and family dinners. Jamie also had a huge love of music, playing his guitar and any drum set he could sit at. Jamie loved clothes and checking himself out in the mirror or any shiny surface he came across. He had a passion for hats, hoodies, t-shirts, sneakers, stealing Tim’s socks and anything made by his Mama or his Nan. Jamie had a strong work ethic and was the third generation of Elliott men to drive big trucks and have a Class 1 license. He accomplished many milestones in his life, both celebrated and not, but he felt his greatest accomplishment was his son, Paxton. Jamie was a kind and caring person who was always willing to help someone in need, be it little old ladies with groceries, family and friends, animals or those down on their luck. He was proud to be called a Mama’s Boy and was definitely a social butterfly. He was always willing to give you a big hug or a handshake and a smile, or tell you something funny to make you laugh. Many of us will remember Jamie always blurting out song lyrics and doing some funny dance moves as he entered a room or to break the ice.
Jamie also battled the disease of addiction and the stigma attached to it. He had long talks with his Mama and Nan about it, his hopes, his dreams and his fears. His hopes were to beat his addiction and to get his life back. His dreams were to watch his son grow up and be with his family and friends in Nova Scotia. His worst fears came true. Because of those fears, he had conversations with his Mama that no parent and child should have to have but he knew the hard reality of his addiction and made his wishes clear in the event of his death. He fought the demon of addiction for years, more than any of us realized, and each time he relapsed it took him further and further into its grasp and away from those he loved. He would often say to his Mama that “Nobody wants to grow up to be an addict, but here I am. I am hurting, I’m in pain and I want more than anything else to get better, but I just haven’t found the right path yet. People just see an addict and they look down their noses at me; they don’t see the person or understand the pain that brought me here, they just look away or right through me, like I don’t exist. Perhaps if people could see it through my eyes, they would be kinder, a little more understanding and a lot less judgmental.” So in honor and in memory of Jamie, please be kinder, and little more understanding and a lot less judgmental.
Jamie is survived by his son, Paxton, and his parents, Cheryl and Tim Martell, Middleton. Also left to mourn are his Valley family: his Nan, Mary Norman and Uncle Jeff (Tanya) Norman, grandfather Frank Martell, aunts Fran Gervais and Theresa Steadman. His Amherst family: his father, Carl Elliott, aunts Debra Landry, Nancy Giffin and Tammy Elliott; uncles Clyde Elliott, Jr., Clayton Elliott and Caleb Elliott, and extended family in the form of cousins and great aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his aunt Karen Norman, his Grampy Brian Norman, his Grampie Clyde Elliott, Sr., his Grammie Bonita Elliott and his cousin Matthew Landry.
As per Jamie’s wishes, cremation has taken place and burial will be at a later date. Donations may be made to The Open Arms Shelter and Inn From The Cold, Kentville, NS, The Portal, Middleton Site, or the charity of one’s choice.
