Obituary of Jacob Dekker
Dekker, Jacob
On Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at the Lady Minto Hospital, Cochrane, Ontario, Jacob Dekker stepped into eternity surrounded by family. He had a short, but intense battle with cancer and is now in the presence of his Saviour.
Jacob is survived by his daughter Sharon and granddaughter Natalie, son Jake (Krista), siblings Sijgje Gort (Albert), Jan Dekker (Lenie), Jacoba Abrahamse-Dekker (Jaap) and Alie Van Heteren (Cor), as well as a host of nieces and nephews. He joins his son Derrik, siblings Joanna Smits (Cornelius), Joost Dekker (Corrie), Marie DeJong (Albert) and parents Jan and Maria Dekker in heaven.
He was born in Sliedrecht, Netherlands. Jacob spent his childhood in the skipper community and went on to spend many years as a captain of his own boat. He often spoke very fondly of his time spent on the canals. In 1987 He immigrated to Canada to begin a career in farming, raising his three children on chicken and turkey farms.
Jacob was known for his love of family get-togethers and large meals with friends and family – always making sure to include some version of “peach pie”. He would entertain everyone with his sarcasm, kind generosity, thick Dutch accent (and comical mispronunciation of words), and with stories of his days as a ship captain in Holland.
Jacob loved his kids, and would frequently show up unannounced with a couple flats of eggs, a case of wine, or some turkey. He enjoyed listening to polka music so loudly that it could be heard from outside the house, and he was a fan of fellow Dutchman Andre Rieu.
A lifelong Christian, Jacob’s eyes would tear up when he talked about one day sitting at the feet of Jesus, soaking in the glory of God in heaven. His faith was an important part of his life, and he called Mission City Bible Church his home.
Family and friends will be received at a Funeral Service at the Living Waters Reformed Church, 22 Holiday Drive, Brantford, Ontario on Tuesday, November 9th 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Covid Protocol requires those attending to wear masks and practice social distancing.
