Obituary
STEPHEN, Jacob (Jake Jr.) George – age 88, of Berwick, NS passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving children, on Wednesday, April 22, 2020. Born in Saint John, NB on March 6, 1932, he was a son of the late Jacob and Mary (O’Toole) Stephen. Jake graduated from St. Thomas University with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education. He taught at St. Malachy’s High School in Saint John, NB and later worked as a salesman for Maple Leaf Milling in Newfoundland and for Lederle Laboratories, Canada in Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. With his wife Sylvia, he founded three businesses, most recently “The Big Scoop” restaurant in 1974 from which they retired in 1992. Jake was a member of St. Monica’s Church in Middleton and Queen of Heaven Chapel in Greenwood. He loved traveling with his dear wife and they spent 20 happy winters in Spain. Jake will be sadly missed by daughter Anne Marie Stephen of Saint John, NB; son Craig Stephen of Kitchener, ON; brother Robert (Margaret) of Saint John, NB; sisters Ramona Stack, Kingston, NB; Terry Morrell, Saint John, NB and Celanie Scoville, Medicine Hat, AB; and uncle Joe (Della) Stephen of Quispamsis, NB, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years Sylvia, two of his brothers; Mike, and Ted, along with his sister, Terry Morrell. In keeping with Jake’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Stella Maris Catholic Church, 201 Bayside Drive on Friday, September 10th at 10:00 am. Interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Donations in Jake’s memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada (Nova Scotia), the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Canadian Red Cross, or to a charity of choice.
