Irene’s Obituary
Irene was born November 29, 1944 at Manning Alberta to Lawrence and Mildred Cowie, a sister to four older brothers on the small homestead farm. Elementary school began at Deadwood, but the death of her father in 1959 changed the family primary residence to Manning where she took her junior and senior high School. She attended Berean Bible College in Calgary from 1965 to 1967. After attending University in Edmonton she began her teaching career at La Crete, AB. From there she went to Germany and taught at the Black Forest Academy. The next chapter took her to Berwyn, AB. That is where she met and married Rodney Crumb, a WWII POW (captured at Dieppe) and a Salvation Army Officer. They had a soft spot for the down and out and those in trouble with the law. They not only held services at the Correctional Institute in Peace River, but for many years that is where you would find them on Christmas Day delivering some goodies to the inmates. The Crumbs also helped manage a second hand clothing store in Berwyn which was staffed by volunteers.
Irene and Rod had a heart for children. They taught a Children’s Bible Club in their home, a ministry they carried on long enough to have a few second generation clubbers. Children with physical or learning disabilities were especially dear. She objected to a song of the day that suggested that all children were born with healthy bodies and bright minds.
Irene “flew away” to glory on May 3 following an aggressive battle with Cancer. She was predeceased by her husband Rod (2015); her brother Gordon (2008); her step daughter Jean (2000); and her parents Lawrence (1959) and Mildred (1997). She leaves three brothers: Arthur and Ralph (Bea) Cowie of Manning; Cecil (Ruby) Cowie of Three Hills; stepdaughter Pat Coates of Berwyn; as well as many nephews, a few nieces, and a score of friends.
