Obituary of Ingrid Frieda (König) Kochhar, Gardiner Mines
It is with exceptional sadness that we announce the passing of Ingrid Frieda Kochhar (nee König), at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Tuesday, July 27th, 2021.
Ingrid was born in Berlin on June 12th, 1937 to Oskar and Mathilde König and grew up in an extended family in Schötmar, Germany. She knew the importance of education and started her career as an assistant paralegal in Germany. To improve her English, Ingrid spent one year in England, where she met her husband Jagdish, who was studying to be a mining engineer. Together Ingrid and Jagdish lived in England, India, and Canada where they settled in Glace Bay in 1976. She fell in love with the natural beauty of Cape Breton, it’s beaches, and it’s people and would go on to enjoy the Island, it’s beauty to its fullest, and making friendships that lasted a lifetime. She passed on her love for the island to her grandchildren who all have fond memories of day trips and picnics across Cape Breton.
Ingrid was predeceased by her parents, Oskar and Mathilde König, husband, Jagdish Kochhar, younger brother Hartmut König, her elder sister, and best friend Marianne Freundlich, her dear Aunt Frieda, and special friend Catherine Godwin.
She will be missed deeply by her three sons, Sajive (Paula), Rakesh (Lynanne, former spouse), and Ashok (Ayesha), her grandchildren, Priyanka (Cory), Ravi, Natasha, Rohit, Arun, and Jase as well as her brother-in-law Jürgen Freundlich and her soul-sister and oldest friend, Elke Ibrahim.
Ingrid kept busy with her many hobbies. She was a loyal friend of the Old Town Hall, contributing and assisting in many ways from the beginning of its restoration 22 years ago. Ingrid was also involved with the Friends of the Savoy, and Duplicate Bridge Club, where she made many special friendships. She was a well-known face at the Cape Breton Christmas fairs with her homemade linens and delicious jam.
In her free time, you could find Ingrid doing a crossword overlooking her beautiful garden, picking berries for jam and juice, or enjoying a game of Scrabble with her grandchildren, with whom she shared beautiful relationships.
Ingrid lived a full life and was loved by all who had the pleasure to know her. She will always be remembered for her free spirit, soft smile, and most of all, her resilience.
In place of flowers, donations in Ingrid’s memory can be made to a charity of your choice.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation only on Thursday, August 5th, 2021 from 2PM-4PM in VJ McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.
