HENRY MAICHER
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Henry John Maicher at the Selkirk Regional Health Center on Saturday, February 13, 2021 with his family by his side.
Henry Maicher, otherwise known fondly as “uncle” to his niece and nephews, was born on September 7, 1938 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to his parents Anton and Magdalena Maicher. Henry was the oldest of two children with his younger sister Sylvia. Henry grew up in Beausejour, Manitoba where he attended school and later becoming a carpenter by trade to which house construction was his speciality.
Uncle eventually bought property bordering the Red River and Cooks Creek in East Selkirk and after building his house and establishing his property, began another career in market gardening. The fields were full of fresh vegetables as far as the eye could see, including cucumbers, potatoes, onions, garlic, peas, beans and tomatoes. Uncle was known to till the land, hand pick all the vegetables and personally deliver them to his customers. There were many memories of Uncle bringing boxes of fresh produce to his family to enjoy.
In later years, Uncle retired from farming and carpentry to take up a life of hobby gardening for the family, fishing including fishing trips with the nephews to Nopiming and Whiteshell Provincial Parks, and reading/studying the bible. Uncle always said that he did not grow up learning the Bible fully, but was able to accomplish this in his retirement. Many visits involved lengthy discussions about the Catholic Faith, the bible and spiritual matters.
The family have always called Uncle’s place “the cabin” and it was a getaway from the city. There are many fond memories of Sunday family outings and gatherings including picnics and bonfires, boating and fishing on the Red River and Cooks Creek, listening to the thousands of geese and ducks in the fall, gardening, and a place to run around, play cricket and take walks through the forest.
Uncle used to spend hours creating new games for his niece and nephews and even constructed a large toboggan slide in the winter in his backyard, which his family would ride joyfully for hours. He had a tremendous amount of energy that many times outlasted his young niece and nephews.
Time spent outdoors – particularly fishing and gardening – with family, listening to Bomber football games, and walking his beloved dogs over the years were his favourite. His nephews and niece learned a great deal from uncle about gardening and fishing techniques which are now being passed down to his great nieces and nephews.
Over the past few years, Uncles health began to decline and he had to leave his land and move to Tudor House Personal Care Center. During his time there, Tudor House took great care of uncle, where he even had his favourite nurses. Family visits changed from the “cabin” to Tudor House, and Uncle took special delight in seeing the great nephews and nieces.
In the last week of life, Uncle was transferred to the Selkirk Regional Health Centre with failing health due to cancer. Family visits now turned to hospital visits to stay vigil and say goodbye.
The family would like to extend a special thank you and note of appreciation to the staff at Tudor House and Selkirk Regional Health Centre for their care, support and compassion.
Left to cherish Uncles memory is his younger sister Sylvia (Anthony), nephews Jeffrey (Marietta), Steven (Stephanie) and niece Michelle (Anonh) along with great-nephews and nieces Anton, Gianna, Andrea, Kyla, Claire, Gracie, Leah, Elliana and one on the way.
A private funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church in Selkirk, MB the Mass will be livestreamed via the following link youtu.be/WA5zE2DcTic , interment will follow Mass at Holy Ghost Cemetery. Pallbearers are Anthony DiNella, Jeffrey DiNella, Steven DiNella and Anonh Khouvongsavanh.
