Helen Isabel Mahoney (nee Reid) age 91 passed away quietly on January 13, 2021 due to complications from COVID-19. Predeceased by her son Terence, parents Harley and Isabel (Whitla), and brother Harley, Helen leaves behind her beloved husband Denis, brother John Calvin (Kelly) Reid, sister-in-law Clodagh Wilson, daughters Sapphire Lightheart (Gabriel), Sharon Batchelor (Bill), and Heather Mahoney-Slaughter (Tim) along with grandchildren Shannon Gaudet (Bob), Kelly Batchelor (Javi), Nikki Slaughter and Jon Slaughter, great grandson Charlie Gaudet, daughter-in-law, Barbara Bishop, many nieces and nephews, neighbours and childhood friends of her children.
Helen met the love of her life, Denis Michael Mahoney in 1949. They married in June 1951 and moved to the Bonnie Doon district in Edmonton where they raised four children. Once the kids had grown she was accepted into the first kindergarten aide program at Grant MacEwan College after which she secured work as a kindergarten assistant at Rutherford School. She loved working with children, volunteering and reading. Later in life she also discovered a talent for writing. Many stories of her life in Edmonton were published in the Edmonton Journal Voices column and her first children’s book “Autumn in the Park” was published in 2017.
After retiring Helen and Denis travelled to Vancouver Island, Eastern Canada, the Yukon, Alaska, the UK and the Cayman Islands before re-establishing themselves in the Oliver neighborhood. Known for her thoughtfulness, helpfulness, warmth and fun personality, Helen will be missed by her family and many friends at Rosedale Estates.
Due to COVID issues an in-person service will not be held and an online celebration will be organized for a later date. Condolence messages can be sent to the Connelly-McKinley funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation, Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.
