Helen Frances Bugler 2021

Obituary
Bugler, Helen Frances May 27, 1932 to October 29, 2021
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Helen, our loving, curious and playful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother on October 29, 2021. A friend and confidante to many, hospitable to all. A natural born social worker, teacher and guidance counsellor. Born in St. John’s, NL on May 27, 1932, she was the daughter of the late William Stanford and Florence Edgington Stanford. Her Mom was a War Bride from Grimsby and emigrated to Newfoundland in 1919. Her career path was so inspiring and diverse it was included in a book featuring outstanding Canadian women. Resourceful and intrepid, with an entrepreneurial spirit and love of learning, her career led her to specific projects in genetic education, issues facing First Nations and rural women. With a Master’s degree in vocational education and a teaching certificate, she worked tirelessly to support, counsel and retrain workers displaced during the Cod Moratorium in the 1990’s. This was rewarding and meaningful work to the daughter of a fisherman. Her employers also included the College of North Atlantic, the Federal Government and Memorial University. Not only did she wear many hats, she made many hats. Her hand crafted boiled wool hats can be found all over the world. She read Shakespeare for pleasure and; if you ask her grandchildren, her greatest accomplishment was her fresh home made buns. She loved plants and flowers and was as happy in her own garden as she was travelling to botanical gardens around the world. Always full of wonder and wonderful. Everything she did, she did with enthusiasm including a loud and off-key impression of Tina Turner’s What’s Love Got to Do With It. She lived her life the way she cooked – on the fly with something on every burner. Survived by three sons David (Harbour Main, NL), George (Beaumont, AB), Michael (Edmonton, AB) and three daughters Beverley Moore (Dartmouth, NS), Wendy Munroe (St. John’s, NL), Sherry Smolders (Surrey, BC); their extended and blended families and her younger brother George (St. Johns, NL). She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Clayton in 2010, daughter Linda in infancy, and her eldest son Carl, January 4, 2021; as well as, her siblings Ronald, Reginald, Dorothy (Cole) and Phyllis (Corrigan). A special thank you to all medical staff who ever cared for Mom and especially the team at the Agnes Pratt Home. Visitation will be at Barrett’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 3rd from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. There will be a memorial service in-person by invitation only officiated by son-in-law, Ken Munroe. All are welcome to participate by zoom arranged by Jehovah’s Witnesses. For zoom information, contact daughter, Wendy’s cell at 709-330-0155.
